It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear friend, Louis Alexander, on October 17, 2025. Lou was a proud advocate for veterans and a lifelong member of the Portland VFW Post #6859 along with Bob Barnes.

Lou faithfully attended nearly every meeting, visited countless fellow veterans, and led many VFW rituals honoring those who had passed. He was also a proud member of the American Legion in Westbrook and the Portland Eagles Club.

To all who knew him, Lou was a true patriot — dedicated, compassionate, and unwavering in his service. 🇺🇸

On Friday, we had the pleasure of sponsoring and attending the Rainbow Affair hosted by the Equality Community Center - ECC 🎉🥂

Located in the heart of downtown Portland, ECC is the first of its kind in Maine — a collaborative workplace for LGBTQ+ and allied social justice–focused organizations, and a vibrant community hub. With nearly 22,000 sq. ft. of space, ECC provides a permanent home where individuals can connect, find resources, and thrive.

Every Mainer deserves the right to live authentically and free from discrimination, and we’re proud to support an organization that makes that vision a reality 🏳️‍🌈

Our Story

Our History

Our Portland funeral home was originally founded as SS Rich and Son Funeral Home in 1838 by Samual Snow Rich. The business operated at facilities on Pearl Street, Exchange Street and Mellen Street before a new funeral home was constructed on Woodford Street in 1959.

At the time of the move, the new Portland funeral home became Jones and Rich Funeral Home, as Edward C. Jones became part-owner along with his father-in-law, Irving Rich. After the death of Jones in 1974, his widow, Elizabeth “Betty” Rich Jones, and her son, David Jones, took over the business.

On January 17, 2017, Jones, Rich and Hutchins Funeral Home unveiled a new name: Jones, Rich and Barnes Funeral Home, recognizing the continued leadership of industry veteran Robert Barnes, a certified funeral service practitioner and vice president of the firm. Barnes, a licensed funeral director, has a long history with the funeral home dating back to 1975.
