From Minnesota to Maine, we have spent our time witnessing the inhumane treatment of our neighbors, co-workers, families, and friends by 🧊. There isn’t a person in our Portland community who hasn’t been touched by the fear, violence, and injustice of this moment.

As is calling for all service industry businesses to close on Friday in solidarity, to a call from Minnesota for a national strike, our managerial staff has decided to offer all of our classes on Friday January 30th for free.

We want to extend a special invitation to service workers, whose work makes this city run. We want to create embodied experiences where folks can resource themselves, so that we can sharpen our revolutionary imagination.

As we care for those most affected with action and intention, we encourage everyone to remember that we endure this moment with the dream of a better world, one that prioritizes the safety and fulfillment of all people.

In addition to our free classes at both locations on Friday, Victoria is also holing her grief evening.

We’ll see you on your mats, Portland 🤍

VINYASA LEVEL 2

Sundays 4pm on Forest Ave beginning in February!

This is a dynamic, alignment-focused vinyasa class best suited for students who already know some of the postural basics taught in our all-level classes.

We flow, linking movement and breath, and occasionally pause to workshop more challenging poses. These include twists, binds, arm balances and inversions, and the transitions toward them. You’ll learn to move into these shapes with precision and intelligence.

Expect a challenging sequence with guidance and variations.

**addendum**

This change was conceived of and written about before ICE was dispatched more heavily in our area. It is impossible to properly describe with words the negative feelings associated with this unnecessary threat to our community safety, or put a value on the ways in which we’ve witnessed folks step up and care for one another. We are working internally to create safety plans in case of ICE presence, but understand if this space isn’t the safest for all invited.

In small and large ways, we are wishing all members of the global majority peace and joy in equal parts to the grief and worry.

N E W B L OG // N E W C LA SS N A M E…

You might have noticed already, but BIPOC Yoga is now called Yoga for the People of the Global Majority…

Yoga for People of the Global Majority is a free asana class exclusively for  indigenous folks, Black folks, and people of color. This class is a space for non-white folks to practice yoga unmasked from the everyday oppression of white supremacy.  We will honor our ancestral lineages in small and large ways, and embody the belonging available to us when we locate ourselves within the context of our global community. You can expect a moderately paced vinyasa-style class with modifications for more or less intensity, and a space that is for us, by us.

Colorism, blood quantum, transphobia, homophobia, sexism, and hate speech of any kind is not allowed! As people of the global majority, this is our space to gather and celebrate our differences and similarities.

This class is FREE and held on the 4th Wednesday of every month from 7-8pm at our Forest Ave location.

MUTUAL AID MONDAY & ICE ALERT

With the recent expanded presence of ICE in the Portland and Lewiston communities, we want to remind our community that we in no way collude with or support ICE. To echo the sentiments from our mayor Mark Dion, “We are a welcoming city. There is no evidence of unchecked criminal activity in our community requiring a disproportionate presence of federal agents. In that view, Portland rejects the need for the deployment of ICE agents into our neighborhoods.” We stand by this sentiment, and are working with our staff and community to make sure we are prepared to protect all people who walk through our doors.

Similarly, this month we are featuring Maine Immigrant’s Right Coalition for our Mutual Aid Monday. Mutual Aid is such an important part of how we can support each other at this time. Visit their website (https://maineimmigrantrights.org/mirc-resource-hub/) to learn how you can support our immigrant community at this time, as well as making a commitment to donate regularly to immigrant serving groups in our area. Groups we’ve featured are Presente! Maine (https://www.presentemaine.org/), ProsperityME (https://prosperityme.org/), and Maine Access Immigrant Network (https://main1.org/index.php). There are incredible people who have spent their lives supporting communities that need it, and looking towards them at this time is a wonderful way to combat the fearfulness and helplessness of this moment.

With escalation across the country and continued violence in Minneapolis, it is more important than ever that we take care of one another and invite each other into practices that nourish us. Join us for one of our weekly free offers. Try our grief evenings for the first time. Bring a new friend into class and make time for a coffee afterwards. We aren’t meant to hold this stuff alone, or have our hard feelings siloed.

We are always here for you, an invitation into movement and community especially when things are tough.

40 Hour Yin Yoga Teacher Training

April 30-May 3, 2026

Cathy & Hannah are together again to lead their Yin Yoga Teacher Training this spring!

In this training you will…
-over the yin yoga practice and its meaning

-explore yin poses and their effects on the physical, energetic and emotional bodies

-allow an experiential exploration that supports intellectual understanding of the meditative nature of the practice and why it is a key to whole health

-open the doorway to the spiritual nature of our physical and subtle bodies through practice

-show how this practice challenges what we have been taught about conventional methods of Yang exercise

-explore teaching skills that facilitate the many benefits of Yin Yoga

This training covers the science as well as the esoteric and will leave you with a foundation and practical skills to share with others in a classroom setting as well as deepen your own practice.

Embodying Yin as a principle and a practice opens us to universal balance in relationship to the yang which can occupy much of life. Yin includes: Spaciousness. Depth. The Inside. The Mystery. Nourishment. Receptivity. And more…

We know there are plenty of training options out there so, if you don’t mind :), we wanted to run through a few reasons why to choose PYP’s Barre Teacher Training…

1. PYP’s Barre Training was born years ago, in 2016, by PYP co-founder/owner, Elizabeth April, even before PYP existed as a brick & mortar. Since then we have refined this tried and true program - it is effective, fun, accessible, and maybe most importantly, not a trend. PYP Barre is here to stay.

2. You can take this training almost anywhere! We don’t ask you to sign a non-compete nor do we believe we “own” any movements that we teach you. We have had trainees go open their own studios, teach at other local studios, etc… We support your growth as a teacher.

3. Tenured, passionate, and creative facilitators. Elizabeth, Jess, Dr. Brooke, & Stephen collectively bring over 30 years of barre teaching experience & even more when you count in the many other movement modalities they teach. Their experience is robust & multifaceted. Bonus: Brooke is a doctor of physical therapy - which elevates this program even more.

4. You don’t want to teach? No problem. This training can also support you digging deeper into own barre practice. A huge amount of empowerment is developed when you understand how to move your body effectively and intelligently.

5. We have fun. A lot of fun. We take movement seriously but we also love to have fun. Expect to laugh, connect, & move a ton in this training.

Interested? Check your inboxes or link in bio for more details!
