Ayurvedic Summer Wisdom: Cool Your Heat, Fuel Your Radiance

June marks the transition into Grishma Ritu (Summer Season in Ayurveda), where Pitta dosha begins to dominate.

We are also experiencing fiery Mars in its natural home with fiery Aries. Double the firepower! Although it can bring a surge of ambition and motivation, it can also increase competitive energy, heated tempers, impulsiveness, and heat-related imbalances, as well as inflammation in the mind and body.

As we are in this season of fire and solar power, it’s time to channel it consciously.

When Pitta is in balance, you’re a force of clarity, courage, and confidence. When it becomes imbalanced, it manifests as inflammation, frustration, impatience, temper, and digestive distress. Ayurveda helps you turn the heat of summer into fuel for joy, not fire for burnout.

Summer Wellness Tips to Balance Pitta &
Spark Inner Joy & Radiance

💧 Your Summer Flow Rituals:

* Wake early (before 6 a.m.) to enjoy cool, peaceful mornings.
* Move your body gently: Think early walks, slow yoga, swimming — not high-heat workouts midday.
* Eat cooling fruits (separate from other foods) and drink coconut water for its cooling effect and to replenish electrolytes.
* Practice gratitude and pause before speaking; take a few calming breaths if you’re feeling irritated.
* Use rose water or sandalwood on the skin for an instant sense of calm.
* At Vibrance Ayurveda, we offer a lovely cooling hydrosol, a blend of white and red roses, that can be stored in the refrigerator for a refreshing mist mid-day or when the sun is at its hottest, or kept in your purse or car for an on-the-go cool-down. If interested in adding this to your summer ritual, call to place an order.

As you practice ways of keeping yourself cool in this fiery time of year, you will find yourself feeling aligned, creative, and joyfully productive — even in the peak of summer’s intensity.

March 29 at 6:57 a.m. eastern time, New Moon/ Partial Solar Eclipse in sidereal Pisces Uttara Bhadrapada 14°47 Pisces: LET THE LIGHT SHINE
*Long post explaining this very important event. See prompts for journaling support.

*Eclipses are powerful revealing events that can usher in massive change, especially if they “hit” your chart in a profound way (making connections to planets or degrees). Hidden truths come out of the woodwork, often emerging around the eclipse date or within the weeks following. We always see this in the news cycle, and we often feel it in our own lives. Eclipses can come with a disruptive bang, grabbing our attention all at once. With so many planets (many retrograde) sitting with the eclipse this weekend, it’s undoubtedly one of the most important and intense planetary events of the year. Give it the attention it deserves by doing your internal investigation so you can let go of what’s not worth bringing forward as this is a time of endings and new beginnings. Eclipses urge us to scrutinize areas of life being highlighted and magnified by the eclipse, whether they are up for release, shift or further consideration. Since eclipses augment what we focus on, use this time to help further you along your path. Before this eclipse, write down your vision for yourself and your community. Be clear about your intentions. Meditate on this during the eclipse. If you’re able to do a fire ceremony (agni hotra), even better. Eclipses are not supportive times to sign contracts, lend money, or do typical everyday things as they can wind up “eclipsing” us in the end. Focusing inward on your path is much more aligned with the energetics of an eclipse.

In the chart of the exact moment of the Solar Eclipse, the New Moon and the Sun sit together with Mercury retrograde, Venus retrograde, Rahu – almost all in Uttara Bhadrapada, a degree of Pisces known as the warrior star. Saturn will shift signs 6 hours later to join this grouping. Outer planet Neptune is also there. To say it’s an intense cluster is literally the astrological understatement of the year. This chart is as intense and complicated as they come. The overwhelm is clear, visually and energetically. This eclipse signals a time of endings of the old and planning for new beginnings.

This Solar Eclipse, in the mystical Uttara Bhadrapada, whose name translates to the "latter blessed feet" or “a ray of light,” has direct correlation to the funeral pyre. Its presiding deity is Ahirbudhnya, “the one, who carries the burden of the world” and the "serpent of the root," and so is connected to the kundalini: the coiled energy residing deep within the first chakra at the base of the spine. This deity is born of Rudra, the god of storms who is a form of Shiva the Destroyer. This nakshatra is also connected to Lakshmi, the loving goddess of abundance and beauty. From these associations alone, it’s clear this Solar Eclipse brings with it a lot of intensity and power - worldly and spiritually. Thankfully, Uttara Bhadrapada is ruled by the planets Saturn and Jupiter, the authorities in the sky. Saturn makes us lean into the karmas we would rather turn away from, while Jupiter gives us the ability to see opportunity and growth, even in difficulty. This eclipse is letting us know whatever is up for us as individuals or as a collective, whatever darkness is asking to be transmuted into light, we have the ability deep within to face and overcome it. But we have to begin with ourselves. We are all in this place now, moving from darkness to light - many times unwillingly so because change – the death of the familiar – isn’t easy.

Eclipses in Uttara Bhadrapada can feel fierce and disruptive because this sign likes to go deep and stir the pot of the subconscious, letting the unsupportive ways, outdated beliefs, toxic habits, secrets, lies - the gunk that’s dimming our light - rise to the top so we can skim it off and throw it in the fire. It’s uncomfortable work and requires that we get out of our own way. While we may want to run and hide or delay the inevitable, there’s no avoiding the existential crisis being highlighted. This Uttara Bhadrapada eclipse will stir the pot over and over and over again, churning our internal seas, helping us to filter out what is no longer necessary so the light within can shine. This is how we purify and refine, by facing our demons and our shadows, the ones buried deep within us that may be running the show without us consciously knowing it. Remember: this is the sign of the spiritual warrior, of the funeral pyre and of the kundalini. For the shakti – the personal/spiritual power – to awaken, rise up and blossom, the ego expressions must be burned away: the attachments, the hubris, the fears, the insecurities, the stories… the shells our true selves are trapped within. These are the things standing in the way of authenticity, of Lakshmi’s gifts of love, beauty and prosperity. Just like the mythology of eclipses, these shadow sides are also yearning for light, for transmutation. The underlying purpose of this eclipse is to shake us from a place of darkness in order to bring us into pure awareness.

Some questions to consider:
🔥What are you being forced to face? What’s asking for your attention?
🔥What ego expressions, attachments and identities do you still cling to?
🔥What fears are holding you back?
🔥What will happen if you do in fact let these go?
🔥What is coming to an end for you? What is ready to be thrown into the fire?
🔥What new path lies beyond the ash that could be clouding your clear vision now?
🔥Is your vision for the future authentic, inspired and elevated?
🔥What changes are you making in your life?

It’s ok to not be totally certain of the next steps and the path forward. The eclipse is highlighting the areas that are ready for change. Their karma is up. Whatever emerges from an eclipse is ready to be investigated more deeply. This can be done in our own meditations and dialogues, or it can be carried out in a bigger way in the public’s eye. Whatever comes with eclipses are always massive in some way. But remember, even the darkest moments can lead to the brightest revelations.

🌕 Friday, March 14 at 2:53 a.m. ET: Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse Uttara Phalguni 29°44 Leo: Conscious Attention / Conscientious Alignment

Eclipses are considered to be powerful revealing events that shine the spotlight on areas that have been hidden or are ready to be seen. They can make secrets public, as we always see in the news the days immediately surrounding an eclipse. They highlight our karmic connections and give us opportunities for further engagement or release. They can usher in massive change, especially if there are connecting to planets or degrees in our personal birth charts. Eclipses spotlight areas of our personal lives based upon the eclipse sign, the house highlighted in our birth charts, personal planets being affected by the eclipse, and planets in the same or close degrees as the eclipse. When an eclipse comes around, we get to do a deep dive into these highlighted areas as eclipses unveil and unravel karmas ready to be faced or released… or we can create deeper karmas during these times. How we engage right now will have a stronger influence than other times. This eclipse in Uttara Phalguni is highlighting our alignments, our actions and our intentions, asking for us to give conscious inspection, attention and alignment to these areas. (Long post with specifics below…)

The Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse “Blood Moon” on March 13/14 will be in “sandhi” end degrees of sidereal Leo called Uttara Phalguni, doubly ruled by the Sun. It’s a charitable sign with healing and humanitarian inclinations, and a strong sense of honor and duty. When prominent in the sky like it is now, it gives us the impetus and strength to face adversity, especially if the support is for the greater good. Uttara Phalguni strives to bring spirituality into daily life, so this eclipse brings the focus on our personal practices and actions, and asks that they be highly aligned and geared towards supporting causes beyond ourselves.

As the star of patronage governed by the deity Aryaman, this eclipse has us look to our agreements, our legal contracts and our personal commitments, and whether or not we are in integrity and honoring them (*but do not sign contracts on an eclipse). The symbols of this lunation are the legs of the marriage bed (representing stability and lasting relationships), and the hammock (reflecting the importance of rest and healing).

Since eclipses shine a super-powered spotlight on things connected to the eclipse sign — in this case 29°44 Uttara Phalguni — it’s important we look at these areas of our lives and make sure they are receiving proper attention. Even the translation of the name “Uttara Phalguni,” meaning the “latter fruit of the tree,” refers to the quality of the product (or the karma) that we create from our actions (or intentions): the fruits of our labor, whether they are in the material realm or mental/emotional/spiritual. Uttara Phalguni is always striving to merge the spiritual with the physical.

Because of this Moon’s strong drive to care for and uplift others, the Lunar Eclipse is bringing our attention to our relationships, our alliances, and our commitments. There’s a purity about this sign and so asks us to look at the underlying drive and motivation we have in the actions we’re taking. This is a sign that wants to do good and to be good.

But its shadow side can be neglectful of its relationships and commitments, or it can be controlling or dismissive. It can be so focused on its responsibilities that it can forget about joy and creativity. These shadow sides could easily get augmented now because the eclipsed Moon is literally in the shadow of the Earth; the material plane could override our deeper more genuine intentions.

Questions in the spotlight:
🌕 Who or what are your strongest commitments and duties to?
🌕 Are your personal health and practices included?
🌕 Are any relationships or responsibilities being neglected?
🌕 What’s asking for healing in your relationships, commitments or contracts? What is coming to an end? What’s asking to be released?
🌕 What’s driving you right now?
🌕 What are the “gunas” or qualities of your motivations and actions? In Vedic thought there are 3 main gunas: sattva (pure, light, peaceful), rajas (passionate, energized, agitated), and tamas (heavy, inertia, lack of thoughtfulness). We need all 3 but some can be more prominent. For ex: tamas helps us sleep, but can also bring about depression; rajas gets us excited but can also make us impatient; sattva supports spiritual practice but can also become sanctimonious.

General Eclipse Suggestions
To utilize this time and energy wisely, it’s recommended to go within using guidance from the nakshatra (Vedic sign) prominent during the eclipse. As eclipses have a magnifying effect, the suggestion is to not treat the time around the eclipse like any other day but rather to engage in spiritual and personal practices. For ex: doing yoga, journaling, grounding breathwork, intention setting, and focused visualizations before the eclipse followed by meditating around the height of the eclipse are recommended.

This Lunar Eclipse’s counterpart is the New Moon/Partial Solar Eclipse in sidereal Pisces Uttara Bhadrapada on March 29, which will undoubtedly be intense for many as Mars connections can create heightened anger and explosive energy. Since this Lunar Eclipse is ruled by the Sun, which represents the “king” and leader, this eclipse will likely be intense for people in prominent positions. As with all eclipses, be prepared for revealing bombshell stories to be made public.

New Moon Swati Sidereal Libra Nov 1 at 8:47am eastern time: Winds of Change/Growth Opportunities
The New Moon is in the beautiful sign of Swati, meaning “independent” or “very good” in Sanskrit, symbolized by coral, the wheat sprout or a blade of grass, and the buffalo. Swati is directly linked to Saraswati, the Goddess of Education and Music, and to Vayu, the God of the Wind, giving Swati the power to scatter things. This can be helpful when “planting seeds” (like when want your message spread far and wide), but can also make us feel unfocused and untethered. Being ruled by entrepreneurial, rebellious and changeable Rahu, Swati can be very driven — but also hard to pin down. This can feel frustrating for those who prefer dogma, predictability and that things to stay the same. But these same qualities give Swati a deep drive for personal development, and an adventurous and open nature as they go with the flow, navigating life and relationships with grace and ease. Its symbols give it the ability to bend with the wind (often times leading the change), and the stamina to keep moving forward.

New Moons generally give us a chance to reflect, give thanks, and prepare for the new. The recent lunar events have urged us look at our paths and prepare for what’s ahead. This New Moon in Swati, a resilient and persistent sign, is asking us to look at what new ways, ideas, beliefs and paths are opening up to us, which are growing easily, and which ones we are eager to nourish. As we connect with this first post-eclipse New Moon, it’s important to try to move forward with Swati’s flexibility, enthusiasm, independence and love of growth.

To consider:
*Swati has the ability to “wipe the slate clean” and even begin again. Does this resonate?
*What “winds” are changing in your life?
*What relationships and endeavors are exciting, adventurous, and growth-promoting?
*What opportunities for personal development and authenticity are presenting?
*Do you feel rooted or scattered?
**Remembering our roots (ancestral, spiritual, physical) and practicing yoga asana that highlight our root/first chakra (like tree pose or mountain pose), could be very helpful during this New Moon cycle.

Diwali (Deepavali) is the Vedic Festival of Lights which will occur for several days and nights this year from October 28-November 3. This magical holiday is celebrated by those who follow India's Hindu/Vedic, Jain, and Sikh cultural traditions. Diwali is celebrated annually around the New Moon in Libra, which this year will occur on November 1.

One of the most important days of the Diwali festival is Dhanteras (Dhanatrayodashi), which will occur on October 29 this year. This festival marks the beginning celebrations of Diwali. It commemorates the god Dhanvantari who imparted the wisdom of Ayurveda for the betterment of humankind, and to help rid humanity of the suffering of disease. Dhanteras and Lakshmi, Ganesha, and Kubera are all propitiated for good blessings at this time.

The main day of Diwali is the Amavasya day of the Lakshmi Puja, which will occur on October 31. This event celebrates Lakshmi’s birth and all the blessings of her love, wisdom, beauty, and abundance.

May your light shine brighter and brighter with each coming day, and may all the devas bless you and yours now during Diwali and always and forever.

Oct 17 at 7:26am eastern time: Full Moon 00°22 Aries Ashwini: Where to Breathe New Life

The Full Moon will be in the early degrees of sidereal Aries, in the healing sign of ASHWINI: the Physician to the Gods, the Miracle Healer, the Heroic and Tenacious One. Its symbol is the horse, connected to pure Prana: our breath and vital life force. Thanks its governing deities, the Ashwin Twins, this Moon is directly linked to Ayurveda: the Science of Life and Mother of All Healing. It’s a powerful Full Moon, the 3rd supermoon in a row (!), and follows a pair of intense eclipses… all of this urging us to fearlessly forge a new path ahead and to focus on the healing the comes from this.

Being ruled by Mars and Ketu, this Full Moon has Mars’ sharp, direct, courageous take charge tendencies, mixed with Ketu’s spirituality and trust of its inner guidance. When we are able to balance and merge these energies, we are then open to receive inspired insight and move forward on it.

Some questions to consider:
•Where are you feeling this kind of self trust and courage right now?

•What areas of life are feeling full and supported?

•What areas are lacking in that vital Prana, motivation or exuberance? Is it because the connection is complete and it’s time to move on? Or does it need healing and revitalizing?

•Are you able to harness your vision?

•What paths are you breathing life into?

Support during this time of transition:
We are in a time of transition: with the seasons, with the eclipses, the many retrogrades in the sky, and even planets shifting this week. Ayurveda says: when life gets hectic, go simple. An easily accessible way is to look at our diet and lifestyle:
•Keep the diet simple and grounded. Kitchari is an easy to digest meal that is also nourishing.
•Spices to boost agni (the digestive fire) are supportive during times of change as we can need extra help processing all that is on our “plate” (not just food).
•Guided breathwork and visualization are especially powerful with this Full Moon time as the sign and symbol of the sign directly connect to prana: where we are focusing our breath and our attention.

Today is the ninth and most powerful night of Navaratri, called Maha Navami, when the ninth avatar of the Devi, known as Siddhiratri, kills the demon king Mahishasura. Tomorrow will conclude Navaratri on the day called Dussehra, the Victory Day of the Goddess.

In ‘Devi Bhagvata Purana’ it is mentioned that after Lord Shiva worshiped Siddhiratri, He was blessed with all siddhis (supernatural powers). By Her blessings, his half body became female and the other half male in the avatar of Ardhnarishvara.

Siddhidatri is one of the most powerful forms of Devi Durga and is believed to give true happiness and peace to Her devotees. She is also the bringer of miracles.

Namashivaya! Jai Maa! Jai Bhagavan! May we all open to see and experience the true miracle of our divine Being which is being shown to us all the time in a myriad forms. Ask, open and receive! She is always flowing for us and especially this day.

Love and light,
Juliana
(See Durga Ashtakam chant in comments section below)

06/10/2024

The next three nights of Navratri are dedicated to the sweet goddess Lakshmi, who represents beauty, abundance, love, kindness and integrity. She ultimately helps us remember our true nature.

Lakshmi in Sanskrit is derived from its elemental form lakS, meaning "to perceive or observe". This is synonymous with lakṣya, meaning "aim" or "objective". In Hindu sacred texts, the Vedas call Mahalakshmi Lakshyayidhi Lakshmihi which means she is the one who has the object and aim of uplifting mankind.

Glory to you, O Mother, glory to you, divine mother Lakshmi. All the gods meditate on you every day and night.

You are yourself the wife of the Divine Father and you are the mother of the world. The sages sing your praises and the Sun and the Moon meditate on you.

As Durga, you grant both happiness and prosperity. Whoever centers his attention on you becomes a recipient of all Prosperity, Contentment, Success and Accomplishment.

None but you dwell in the nether regions of the earth and you alone ensure good luck, bring to light the effect of action (karma), and protect all worldly treasures.

All the virtues collect themselves where you have your dwelling; with your grace and favor even the impossible becomes possible without causing any nervous agitation.

Oh Daughter of the Ocean of Milk and the beauteous temple of all propitious virtues, you are verily a living mass of all fourteen gems with which none else is endowed.

Whosoever hymns this prayer to Lakshmi is purged of his sins and experiences the ecstasy of joy.

Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Swaha!

“Michelle is a tremendously talented and knowledgeable Ayurvedic practitioner. I am in a 6-month program that includes exploratory consultations that meander like a river to wherever they must go to bring in needed wisdom and awareness.

Also: natural herbs/plants, habit recommendations suited to my Dosha and physical needs, luxurious body treatments (powerful and centering), and a lot of feeling and thinking. She is generous with her time, compassion, intuitive listening, and unrehearsed spot-on guidance.

I just spent 4 hours this morning with Michelle in conversation and then received a magical Kati Basti treatment, during which I was internally guided to some profound new knowledge. I am so happy that I have done this for myself.” - JACKIE L.
