Which back muscles are most responsible for maintaining upright posture and preventing things like forward head posture?

It might not be what you think. New research by Nakahira, Y., Iwamoto, M., Igawa, T. et al. published in Nature showed that the longissimus thoracis, multifidus, psoas, and iliacus muscles are most responsible for upright posture.

Iliacus and psoas major are two of the most important muscles in the human body. They are responsible for stabilizing the femur, pelvis, and lumbar spine which is the foundation to the body. Without good psoas and iliacus strength and function, the spine is not held upright and things like kyphosis, forward head posture, and rounded shoulders will start to happen. These can lead to lots of types of pain including headaches, neck pain, herniated discs, rotator cuff tears, and back pain.
