Oregon's experience is reflective of one of the significant challenges in the expanding legal U.S. ma*****na industry: the ability of governments to keep track of their own markets.

A recent Sunday afternoon at the Bridge City Collective cannabis shop in North Portland saw a steady flow of customers. Little wonder: A gram of w**d was selling for less than the price of a glass of wine.

If you live in Portland and enjoy w**d, you’re in luck: We’re currently experiencing a massive statewide cannabis surplus. Prices are falling, and there’s no bottom in sight.

Part of this headline is true. The state is definitely licensing too many producers. On the other hand, there are farms already going out of business that have been selling pounds as low as $50 to wholesalers > wholesalers selling $100 lbs to dispensaries and processors as long as they buy 100 lbs at a time. I'm sure it's probably not good product, but it's still screwing with the market. The state legislature made it much more difficult for us when they changed the minimum 51% ownership by a 2 year Oregon resident requirement that was part of the legislation we voted for.

Oregon definitely has too much pot. But don't blame the surplus on growers. The state keeps licensing cultivators, so they can cash in on fees.

When there’s approximately 900 licensed rec producers with another 500+ producer licenses pending and there’s currently more than a 2 year supply of cannabis the state is estimated to be able to consume already in the METRC system, who is going to buy all this w**d? 🤔

At Elevated Agriculture we do not use products produced by companies owned by Bayer/ Monsanto/ Miracle-gro. We support a market dominated by locally owned and operated craft cannabis companies and the individuals who have worked to legitimize responsible medical and recreational cannabis use. The multitude of cannabis strains available today are derived from countless hours of work by people who care deeply about this plant. There is no need for GMO cannabis that is resistant to toxic chemicals produced by these chemical companies. Make no mistake, these companies exist to manufacture and sell chemicals.

It is possible that Bayer and Monsanto could create a monopoly on ma*****na seeds in the same way that they have created a monopoly on corn and soy.

With recreational cannabis set to go legal in California in January, one of the largest U.S cannabis companies, Organa Brands, has partnered with the company that has a patent on trays used by the TSA to alert travelers they may not travel with pot. The program is being rolled out in Ontario.
