Rest In the Silence April 8th, 2025
I recently enjoyed attending a week-long silent retreat, (a “Khilvat”) with several close Sufi friends on lovely forested lands in Washington State. This was the perfect “time out” from the busy world of Doing. It felt like finally getting something to drink after being so thirsty for way too long. I relished the idea of not having to attend to the needs of others and focus on myself - to recharge my batteries, my enthusiasm, my vitality, gain some clarity and REST. I was there on this land to be in prayerful silence, to dive more deeply into the mystery of my Self, to stop mental chattering distraction and doings -to make room for slowing down of all movements, and thoughts, to merge into a focus on an unending moment of Being.
Each day I wandered the land. Lake Flora was waiting to greet me with her mist and tranquil waters. She is surrounded by the frilly thickets of grasses and willow that decorate her edges. A trail beckoned me to explore, while birds calling to each other fluttered pass me. The winds rustled the trees to dance, while the lushly dense mosses and ferns decorated my path.
Through the movement of my body, in a relaxed tempo of my strides, i easily slipped into the a favorite state of Connection with All Creation - an expanded felt-sensing of the energies I was moving in. Deep breathes brought smiles with a returning ease and inner calm. I looked along the shore for a suitable place to do my ritual, one that was not too muddy, perhaps with a rock or log to sit upon?
I love water! I love to connect with waters every time I am near them. I Must get my feet in the water, no matter the weather, season or temperature of the water. In someways, the colder the better. Putting my feet in wild water immediately brings me to my Body. Though my feet may start to feel rather numb, I feel invigorated and grateful to be ALIVE!
In the style of the Sufi, I perform my ritual of ablutions, to purify and bless all of my body, mind and heart. Dipping into the water and blessing each part of me, hands, legs, arms, back, front, face, headband heart with the sacred water. I do get fairly damp. Next In the Andean tradition, I release old dense energies that I hold and allow them to flow out of me and into the Lake waters. Lake Flora loves my “Hucha” my dense energies made from my worries, anxieties etc, because for Her, it is candy. I give her my “Hucha” - to flow out of me thru my tailbone and into the water to transmute for me…and she gives me new “Sami” refined energies to heal and rebalance me. This Sacred reciprocity, creating energetic bonds and friendships with the waters, trees, wind,Sun, Moon, all animals, other people etc is called “Ayni” in Quechua, which is a foundational concept in the cosmology of the South American/Andean Cultures and is the way we heal each other and help build a more loving world.
I would love to show you in person how I do this and for you to experience this for yourself. Join me for the next time I plan to put my feet in the water…
Let’s connect.
