Here are some questions you can ask your teen. Adapt them to your unique circumstances:

🟣What are some of the different reasons or ways that you use your phone?
🟣Do you sometimes use it to manage your anxiety?
🟣What are ways that it's helpful?
🟣What do you think I don't understand about why your phone is important to you?
🟣Do you think my concerns are valid?
🟣What's a way we can compromise and both work on using our phones less?

Too often, the kid that's struggling identifies themself as the screwed up one in the family. The source of all problems. NOT HELPFUL.

Too often, one parent takes on the entire burden of responsibility for their child's struggles. "It's all my fault." ALSO NOT HELPFUL.

Blame in general is not helpful. Focus on the present and moving forward.➡

We just got back from a fabulous vacation in Mexico (Riviera Maya) where we introduced our kids to snorkeling and swimming in caves.

While we did have such a great time, there are some things that you wouldn't pick up from our many amazing family photos...

✅At various points, we all had to stretch our comfort zone and get through things that made us a bit (or a lot) nervous.
✅At times, there was arguing and some frustration.
✅We all got to work on practicing flexibility, patience, and letting things go.

I'm grateful for the fabulous privilege and opportunity to connect and play with my family on vacation.

We only get stressed about the things and people we care the most about.

Focusing on the qualities of your family members that you love and appreciate more while spending less time dwelling on their deficits and annoying traits will make you much happier.

I hope you're finding ways, big and small, to see through the stress and enjoy and appreciate your family this summer.

*My kids have requested that I not post pictures of their faces online, thus the scuba masks.

From Debbie's Episode Description.

"In this conversation, we discussed how to build and maintain supportive relationships with teens, the crucial difference between “acceptance” and “agreement” when validating a teen’s emotional experience, the power of co-regulation, and how a child’s state of regulation affects their “story” and meaning-making about themselves and their experiences. Whether you have a teenager or a soon-to-be teen or simply seeking a deeper connection with your kids, this episode is packed with invaluable insights. I hope you enjoy it."

Things you’ll learn from this episode.

🟣Why today’s teens feel so disconnected and lonely
🟣How P.A.C.E. (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy) is the “attitude of connection” when it comes to engaging with teenagers
🟣What the difference between “acceptance” and “agreement” is when it comes to validating a teen’s emotional experience
🟣What the Polyvagal Theory is and awareness of its role can help us understand and better support struggling adolescents
🟣Why a child’s state of regulation in any given moment affects their “story” and meaning-making about themselves and their experiences
🟣Why one of the most powerful things an adult can do for a teenager is to co-regulate.

Finally, if you have a differently wired child (the vast majority of us do in some way), please make sure you download this podcast!

I can't recommend this movie more highly. It opens up a lighthearted way to talk about our various emotions and parts.

Even if your child doesn't want to talk obsessively about their feelings afterwards, I think they'll internalize a lot of validating messages just from watching it.

I hope you get to spend some quality time with your kids today.

If your relationship is strained right now, hang in there! I know this can be a lonely and sad day for many dads who don't have the relationship they want with their kids.

Keep showing up for them in different ways and let them know you care. If you're consistent and genuine, they'll eventually see it and come around.

The main reason we stay stuck isn't a lack of solutions, those are everywhere. In most cases, our kids don't need answers, they need to feel supported and seen.

"I'm with you, I feel for you, and you got this!"

I know, this can be so hard because our mama/papa bear instincts can't stand to see our kids in pain. But we have to overide that sometimes and remember that the most important ingredient to resilience is loving, attuned connection and empathy.

Helping your teen move through their anxiety will require you to tolerate their discomfort. Start with small steps, even baby ones. But they will likely resist any attempt that involves discomfort or uncertainty. Stay loving, patient, and firm.

Getting better at moving through their discomfort without retreating each time is exactly what they need to build up their resilience and strengthen their anxiety tolerance.
