Word of the Day

Enmesh

An enmeshed relationship is a relationship where people are overly connected and have unclear boundaries.

The takeaway here is express your needs. You are not the other persons reality. Take space for yourself. Take time to organize your life as you see it going, well.

Here is a helpful article to read by, Melissa Porrey.

Enmeshment happens when people, particularly parents and their children, lack boundaries and emotional autonomy. Here’s how it manifests.

Symptoms and difficulties with the living legacy of trauma:

-emotionally overwhelmed
-depression
-decreased concentration
-anxiety, panic attacks
-insomnia
-loss of sense of the future, hopelessness
-shame and worthlessness
-few or no memories
-nightmares, flashbacks
-hypervigilance, mistrust
-numbing
-chronic pain, headaches
-substance abuse
-eating disorders
-feeling unreal or out of body
-irritability
-loss of sense of "who I am"

Trauma comes in many forms from toxic relationships, housing crisis, natural disasters, abuse, war, and many others. Healing and finding peace and regaining a balanced life can be difficult.

Here are a few ways to direct yourself by using Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. This resource protocol is researched and developed by the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute.

PEACE

P- Pause what you are doing to briefly identify bodily signals of unrest.
E- Embody a somatic resource that feels supportive in your body in this moment>see below list of somatic resources.
A- Acknowledge the positive effects of the resource.
C- Concentrate your attention on the positive effects of the resource for 15 seconds or more.
E- Engage with your environment.

List of Somatic Resources:

* Orient, look around, name colors you see
* Lengthen your spine
* Ground, sense your feet connect with the earth
* Breathe slowly & lightly through your nostrils, into your belly
* Place hands on heart or belly, or hug yourself
* Smile in a way that feels right to you
* Make a "Stop" gesture with palms open, facing outward
* Stand up, feel your feet push against the floor
* Push palms of hands against each other, the wall, or an object
* Hum with a low pitch and sense of vibration
* Move rhythmically: rock, sway, bounce, swing
* Walk slowly, sensing your legs moving
* Embody your culture, its traditions, and/or the support of your ancestors

Embracing your PEACE is self-care. I like to look at it like Mental Fitness and building your resilience.

Humanity is fragile. Humans are fragile. The Earth is not fragile.

Here is a quote from Dr. Ruby Gibson;

"Trauma happens when we lose voice, choice, and power.

Healing occurs when we regain voice, choice, and power."

A leading way to find your voice again, besides seeking out a counselor, clinical psychologist, or even a psychiatrist, is to write about how you feel, what you think about how you feel. This can be expressed though different formats like pen and paper, typed, drawn, painted, sketched, photography and many more. This can be helpful in unloading some of the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual weight we bear from all kinds of trauma. Make a list of short-term and long-term goals.

It can be time consuming to find a mental health clinician with modern day demands for these services. Your mental health matters, your voice matters, your choice matters, and your power matters. So, utilize different tools of healing to help yourself one day at a time.

Keep a journal of your journey. You can look back to see how far you've come on your path to healing. You will notice what works for you and what doesn't. Nothing is perfect though. Be patient with yourself. Give space for yourself to love who you are today.

No one can claim to love you when they are abusing you. You may be experiencing toxic and abusive relationship(s) and not really notice it because the person abusing you claims they love you. You may try and rationalize the abuse for many reasons. IT is a huge red flag when the abuse starts to escalate as you push back on the abuser and stand up for yourself. Even if you do not live with the individual(s) this is a form of domestic violence.

"What is classed as domestic violence?
We define domestic abuse as an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behavior, including sexual violence, in the majority of cases by a partner or ex-partner, but also by a family member or carer."

https://www.womensaid.org.uk/information-support/what-is-domestic-abuse/

Most people think of physical abuse, but abuse comes in many forms like:

Psychological and Emotional Abuse
Disability and Domestic Abuse
Financial and Economic Abuse
Coercive Control
among many other forms of abuse.

Most often the abuse comes from someone who has a hierarchy of power over another. They will use that power as they see fit and often lack compassions or empathy for the person(s) they are abusing.

Here is a quote from author, Bell Hooks, "All About Love"

"Abuse and neglect negate love.

Care and affirmation,
the opposite of abuse and humiliation,
are the foundation of love,

No one can rightfully claim to be loving when behaving abusively."

It is important to reach our for help. I certainly have and that is okay.

Domestic abuse is an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour, including sexual violence.
