As a reminder, PANS is pediatric acute onset neuropsychiatric syndrome. It involves a very fast, dramatic, and sudden onset of OCD or restrictive eating. There are also other symptoms such as separation anxiety, ticks, bed wetting, depression, and a whole range of additional challenges.

What we need to do is recognize it, support the family and patient, and address the inflammation and the infection.

Anyone who is experiencing these sudden symptoms should see a healthcare provider, talk to them about the sudden onset, and ask what can be done about it.

Night terrors usually happen in the first 1/3 of the night, during non‑REM sleep. Kids may cry, scream, talk in their sleep, or look terrified 😢. Their eyes might be open or closed, but they’re not aware of what’s happening — and they won’t remember it the next day. Gentle reassurance is helpful, but don’t try to wake them; just keep them safe and soothed.

Later in the night, during REM sleep (lighter sleep when the eyes move quickly), kids are more likely to have bad dreams. They wake more easily, seek comfort, and usually remember what scared them 🌙.

You only need to worry about night terrors if safety becomes a concern. For example, if your child gets out of bed or sleepwalks. In those cases, consider gates or extra safety measures.

Let your pediatrician know if your child is vomiting in the morning or waking with frequent headaches. Otherwise, night terrors are very common in toddlers, preschoolers, and even early grade‑schoolers. Most kids outgrow them, and they’re not harmful ❤️

I’ve been talking a lot lately with families about practical ways to cut down on prescription costs 💊💸, so I pulled together a few places to start:

- GoodRx
- Asking your pharmacist about available coupons
- Checking Cost Plus Drugs

…And no, I don’t get any royalties for saying that! But I’d happily accept them if anyone’s offering 🤣💸!

Honored to speak with pediatric therapists at a local hospital about PANS/PANDAS and the growing need for awareness around neuroinflammatory conditions in children.

March’s newsletter is almost ready, filled with education, updates, and resources.

When it’s icy ❄️, dark earlier, and everyone’s climbing the walls, structure saves the day. Obstacle courses, kitchen science, dance parties, strength training, quiet recharge time… and yes, more screens. Balance > perfection. ✨

We are so excited to welcome Melissa to the TPM team as a nurse 👩‍⚕️ practitioner! Melissa values a holistic approach that considers the whole patient, addressing not only medical needs but also overall well-being.

After working as a pediatric nurse from 2010–2015 👶, she began her career as a nurse practitioner and has since worked at Boston Children’s Hospital, Mass General for Children, and, more recently, with MaineHealth in pediatric primary care. 🏥 These experiences have strengthened Melissa’s commitment to delivering high-quality, individualized care for each child and family that she sees daily. ✨

Outside of her professional role, she enjoys spending time with her husband, son, and her Vizsla ❤️. She also enjoys running 🏃‍♀️, yoga 🧘‍♀️, hiking, and exploring the outdoors throughout the Seacoast. 🌲🌊

For all the moms who feel like they’re drowning or have lost themselves, I did my first triathlon with these amazing mamas 10 years ago. Some of our little ones were still in strollers, but now they’re big—and we’re still at it! You will find yourself again. ✨
