Baby safety tip! 🤍💜

Today’s tip: Babies need a FIRM sleep surface!

A firm mattress helps prevent suffocation, rebreathing, and positional asphyxiation. Unlike soft surfaces, it does not conform to a baby’s face or body, keeping them safer while they sleep.

🟣 Crib and play yard mattresses manufactured after 8/15/22 are required to meet the Crib Mattress Standard, which ensures proper firmness.

🟣 If your mattress is older, it doesn’t automatically mean it’s unsafe — test its firmness and ensure it’s stored correctly.

🟣 Avoid layering blankets or using thick mattress pads to “soften” the surface. One thin fitted mattress protector and one fitted sheet is all you need.

🟣 If your mattress has a softer side for toddlers, be sure you know which side is firm and when it’s safe to flip.

🟣 Steer clear of memory foam mattresses — they are too soft for infants.

🟣 Terms like “breathable” are not regulated, so firmness remains the key factor for safe sleep.

A firm mattress is simple, but it’s one of the most important ways to protect your baby. 💜
