Congratulations to Dr. Khan Iftekharuddin, ODU Research Professor and Faculty, who was recently awarded $2.3M from the National Institutes of Health for his research in using artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer modeling to detect brain cancer recurrence through less invasive strategies and inform treatment, monitoring, and management.

Dr. Iftekharuddin's award from the NIH builds on his extensive research portfolio and multi-industry and multi-disciplinary contributions. Among them are his 2014 award for air quality measurement using LiDAR, his 2016 award from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering to analyze and track brain tumors using quantitative image modeling, his 2017 award for anthropometrics-based human identity recognition using graph-based representations and multi-fidelity machine learning, and his 2022 award from the HRBRC for using artificial intelligence and machine learning to detect atypical Alzheimer’s disease cases.

Congratulations to Dr. Iftekharuddin; we're eager to follow along!

We LOVE our space at Assembly in Downtown Norfolk!

Here are some pictures (pre-painting of the walls) of community members checking out our Prusa Mk4 FDM 3D printer, which enables our collaborators to create to-scale prototypes cheaply and quickly with up to five different materials simultaneously.

The HRBRC fosters community and inspires ideas, growth, and innovation. We are thrilled to be part of the Assembly community and are excited for what's to come!

This week, our Participating Organization spotlight is on Sentara Health!

Sentara Health is one of the largest health systems in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, and among the top 20 largest not-for-profit integrated health systems in the country. It has 30,000 employees, 12 hospitals in Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina, and the Sentara Health Plans division, which serves more than 1.2 million members in Virginia and Florida.

Sentara plays an important role in the HRBRC’s mission to drive health, equity, and biohealth innovation.

To date, Sentara Health has supported HRCEA-complementary initiatives in mental health activation and consultation, data science and analytics, and the MMCVa mini-grants initiative. Through the HRBRC CAF, team members at Sentara have collaborated with colleagues from other HRBRC Participating Organizations on projects to explore data models that define social determinants of health, innovation in non-emergency transportation, and utilizing complex data sources to evaluate the impacts of COVID-19 on chronic kidney disease and bone loss.

With ongoing collaborative endeavors in medicine, advanced computing, and community health and engagement, we're honored to work with a community-oriented institution committed to providing the best possible services for its patients, while also working to better understand and inform healthcare and health outcomes through collaboration, research, and community initiatives.
