On International Women’s Day, we celebrate strong women.

But can we talk about the girls who were strong because they had to be?

The girls who:

Got good grades
Overthought everything
Cried in private
Tried twice as hard
Lived in constant overwhelm

And were told they were “just anxious.”
“Too sensitive.”
“Dramatic.”
“Perfectionists.”

Many of them were not difficult.

They were undiagnosed.

ADHD in girls often looks quiet.
It looks high achieving.
It looks responsible.
It looks like coping.

And it gets missed.

This Women’s Day, let’s stop confusing survival with strength.

And let’s start recognizing the girls who masked, overcompensated, and carried more than anyone realized.

Understanding is empowering.
Early recognition changes everything.

If this was you, or you are raising her, save this.

Some kids get good grades.
Follow directions.
Stay quiet in class.

And still go home completely depleted.

High functioning often means:

Masking.
Overcompensating.
Overthinking every interaction.
Working twice as hard to look “normal.”
Holding it together until it is safe to fall apart.

Just because a child is coping
does not mean they are not carrying.

Just because they look fine
does not mean they feel fine.

Sometimes the most capable kids
are the most exhausted.

If your child crashes at home but “does great” at school…
look deeper.

Support does not require a crisis.

Bullies scan first. Then they test.

They usually look for:

1️⃣ The child who reacts emotionally
2️⃣ The child who struggles socially
3️⃣ The neurodivergent child who stands out
4️⃣ The kind child who will not fight back
5️⃣ The child who avoids confrontation
6️⃣ The child who already seems unsure
7️⃣ The child who does not have strong backup
8️⃣ The child who is different in any visible way

It is about control. Not confidence.

If your child suddenly changes, withdraws, or says “it’s fine” but feels off… look closer.

Early protection builds long term confidence.

They look fine.
They are doing well in school.
They are not “hyper.”

So no one sees the struggle.

High functioning ADHD is often missed because it does not fit the stereotype. But behind the good grades and responsible reputation, there is usually exhaustion, shame, and a brain working overtime just to keep up.

If your teen crashes at home after holding it together all day, that is not manipulation. That is burnout. Home is where the mask comes off.

ADHD is not a character flaw. It is a regulation difference. And the sooner we understand that, the less shame they carry.

“They didn’t invite me.”

It sounds small.
It sounds like something they should just “get over.”

But exclusion doesn’t feel small — especially to a teen.

Being left out activates the same part of the brain that processes physical pain.
It can trigger questions like:

• What’s wrong with me?
• Did I do something?
• Am I not good enough?

And most teens won’t say all of that out loud.
They’ll shrug.
They’ll say, “It’s whatever.”
But internally, it can chip away at confidence.

As a parent, resist the urge to minimize it.
Instead of “You’ll find better friends,” try:
“That must have hurt. Tell me what happened.”

Validation doesn’t make them weak.
It makes them feel safe.
