"Colleen Hairfield, RN, went above and beyond for me and my family during one of the most intimate and vulnerable times in our lives," shares a very grateful patient of Bon Secours — Mary Immaculate Hospital.

embodies every quality this award represents—she is caring, kind, competent,
compassionate, understanding, dedicated, and loving.

From the moment she walked into my room, Colleen provided care that was not only professional but deeply genuine. She took the time to explain everything in detail, ensuring I understood each step of the process, which made me feel empowered and less anxious. She also involved my family in the care experience, which meant the world to us. Her ability to include everyone in the room and make everyone feel seen and valued was truly special.

During labor, when I began to feel discouraged and overwhelmed, Colleen was a
constant source of encouragement. Her words and presence gave me the strength
to keep going, and I honestly don't know how I would've made it through without her support. After delivery, she continued to care for not only me and my baby but also my husband, making sure we were all comfortable and well-attended to.

What really stood out was the extra step Colleen took to connect with my daughter,
who came to visit after the birth. She took the time to talk to her, make her feel
included, and even gifted each of my children a book with a heartfelt message
written on the back. Each note was personal, loving, and thoughtfully written
specifically for each child. That small but incredibly meaningful gesture brought tears to my eyes and showed the depth of Colleen's compassion and dedication.

Colleen made us feel cared for, respected, and loved, and for that, I am forever grateful. There is no doubt in my mind that she deserves the DAISY Award."

We recently celebrated our last Passport to Health class, and what an amazing way to finish this journey! 🎉 The class was full of energy, laughter, and learning. Chef Maurice Simmons joined us and made healthy cooking look so easy and fun! 👩‍🍳✨

He showed us creative ways to prepare delicious meals without using salt — proving that healthy food can be full of flavor and joy with herbs, spices and natural flavor builders. 🥗💚

Thank you to everyone who joined us throughout this series and made it such a success!

We recently held the final class of our first Latino Passport to Health Series! 🎉 We wrapped up our body activity session with a fun mini Zumba class — our instructors were fantastic and made sure the exercises were modified for all ages and abilities. Afterward, we celebrated our first graduation! 🎓

A big thank you to everyone who came out and participated. Despite the rainy day, it turned out to be a wonderful and successful event! 🌧️💪💃

It was an honor to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at our Bon Secours — Community Health Hub in Portsmouth! We shared fresh produce, meats and more with our Latino community and beyond, and were joined by amazing volunteers from Smithfield Foods, who did a fantastic job supporting our event. We even had a dance instructor teaching us some Bachata, Merengue and Salsa moves — it was so much fun and a great feeling seeing all the smiles! 💃🕺

It was an honor to support the recent youth training, bringing together 30 enthusiastic participants eager to learn and grow. The training provided an engaging and educational experience, highlighting the importance of community involvement and emergency readiness, which included Hands-Only CPR Training and Stop The Bleed.

This successful event was made possible through a collaborative partnership between Bon Secours, Big Homies Inc., the American Heart Association and the Portsmouth Fire Department. Together, these organizations worked to empower young people with valuable health and safety knowledge while fostering teamwork and leadership.

The day was filled with energy, learning and inspiration—reflecting the commitment of both the youth and community partners to creating healthier, stronger communities.

This event also served as a countdown to the 2025 American Heart Walk, which will take place on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Outlook Beach, Fort Monroe, and on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Neptune’s Park, Virginia Beach. Participants left motivated to continue supporting heart health awareness and to take part in the upcoming walks.

These clinics are open to individuals 6 months of age and older and is designed to make getting vaccinated quick, safe, and accessible — all without leaving your vehicle.

With the support of caring nurse navigators, patients like Kenya never walk their journey alone—thanks to generous Bon Secours Foundation donor gifts, hope and guidance make all the difference.

Traveling an unknown road can be scary. Having someone who knows the way can make a world of difference. Because of donor gifts, Kenya Hargrove is getting help on her journey to recovery from breast cancer from an oncology nurse navigator.

“When my family and I got the news that I had breast cancer, our nurse navigator was amazing,” Kenya says. “She has been nothing short of a blessing. She gave us time to process the news, and from our very first conversation, she made it clear I was not alone.”

Nurse navigators collaborate with the entire team treating patients with complex diseases. They answer questions, make appointments and do follow-up calls. They are members of a hospital care team that are becoming more commonplace thanks to generous Foundation donors.
