✨ Let’s Talk Gross Body Movement & Why It’s AMAZING Sensory Input! ✨
We talk a lot about regulation... and one of the most powerful (and FUN!) tools we have is gross body movement.
Gross motor activities use the large muscles of the body... think jumping, climbing, pushing, pulling, spinning, crashing, swinging, running, animal walks, obstacle courses, wheelbarrow walks, and heavy work. 💪
Why is this so important?
🧠 It feeds the sensory system.
Movement activates the vestibular system (balance and spatial awareness) and the proprioceptive system (body awareness and muscle input). These systems help the brain understand:
Where am I in space?
How much force am I using?
What is my body doing?
❤️ It supports regulation.
Intentional movement can calm an overwhelmed nervous system or wake up a sluggish one. That means better attention, improved engagement, and fewer challenging behaviors rooted in sensory dysregulation.
🗣️ It builds communication & learning readiness.
A regulated body = a brain that can learn!!!
After heavy work or movement breaks, we often see improved focus, more flexible thinking, and stronger participation.
🤝 It reduces behavior driven by unmet sensory needs.
When we proactively provide safe, structured movement opportunities, we’re meeting the need before the behavior becomes the communication.
🌲 And the best part? It doesn’t have to be complicated!
Jumping on a trampoline. Pushing a laundry basket. Carrying groceries. Climbing at the playground. Nature walks. Animal races down the hallway.
Movement is not a “break from learning.”
For many of our kids — it is the pathway to learning.
Let’s keep building strong bodies, regulated nervous systems, and confident learners — one jump, push, swing, and crash at a time.
