Last month, our PA program had the incredible opportunity to go to Nicaragua on a medical mission trip focused on providing care to underserved communities. ๐๐ Our team of 21 2nd and 3rd year PA students, along with 4 medical professionals from St. Lawrence County, came together to make a meaningful impact during their Spring break.
On day one we hosted a health fair, educating kids ages 5โ16 on oral hygiene, hydration, fitness, and first aid to help build healthy habits for the future. Later that evening, teenage boys and girls groups discussed social media safety and their future goals before playing soccer with our students. New mothers discussed breastfeeding and nutrition and relaxed with some yoga meditation. Local health promoters, who routinely follow up with the communities, learned about cancer screenings and stop the bleed training.
On days 2-6 we set up pop-up community health clinics in remote homes and churches, bringing healthcare directly to those in need. Beyond the clinics, we visited a local nursing home and brought laughter, bubbles and dancing along with our clinical care.
In just 4 days, our team delivered medical care to nearly 400 patients. This experience was a powerful reminder of why we chose this profession: to serve, to learn, and to make a difference wherever we are needed. We are so grateful for the support that made this trip possible and for the communities who welcomed us so warmly.
