Memorial Day Travel Trips For Caregivers
Celebrating the long holiday weekend can be exciting as well as exhausting when you are caring for someone with special needs. Whether the person is elderly, has dementia or other limitations, some advanced planning will go a long way in helping you make things run a bit smoother.
Making adaptations is necessary if you can foresee problems. Caregivers should consider the following T.R.I.P. tips:
TIME: Time your travel. Plan ahead the travel time as well as scheduled activities so it causes the least amount of stress/anxiety for both YOU and your loved ones. Any unfamiliar area or environment can be very overwhelming, so try to keep with routines as much as possible and try to remain patient during times of confusion. Ambulation may be difficult so any aids used may result in needing extra time.
REDUCE stress/anxiety: Familiarize yourself and your loved one with any types of mass transportation procedures. If flying, request early boarding and contact TSA prior to departure to office assistance with special screening. If using a walker or wheelchair, check on the storage of the item. Carrying a laminated card to present to wheelchair/flight attendants is often helpful. (EX: “I have Parkinsons and Dementia; we appreciate your patience with us!”)
INCLUDE breaks and rests: Overexertion causes exhaustion and agitation. Allow you and your loved one time to rest and recharge. Take regular bathroom breaks. Enjoy leisurely lunch/water breaks and try to avoid rush hour traffic. Don’t try to plan every single moment of every day; some activities or visits may have to wait or be postponed.
PLAN for contingencies: Changes in schedules are the rule, not the exception. You should have snacks, water, a light jacket and prescription medications ready for delays. Be sure to bring along a list of meds and doctor information in case a medical emergency occurs. If the person is incontinent, it might be a good idea to carry a change of clothing or an extra brief in a carryon bag.
This is not an extensive list, nor does it constitute medical advice… Check with your primary care provider before any travel is considered!
