Sunday morning herbal infusionā€¦

Although I work primarily with essential oils and concentrated botanical extracts, I also dabble in herbalism, which is of great benefit in creating some of the oil-based serums, massage oils, and salves that I create. Many herbs and other whole plants offer benefits that are more comprehensive than essential oils alone, as some chemical constituents are lost in the distillation process that creates the essential oil.

Today Iā€™m infusing German Chamomile (locally sourced from a friend), Yarrow (from my garden), and Helichrysum italicum (from a commercial organic source) in organic MCT coconut oil.

After this melds for the appropriate time, Iā€™ll strain out the plant matter and use the remaining oil in therapeutic blends. It will have a light scent from the plant matter, much less intense than an essential oil.

These three plant allies are helpful to address multiple kinds of inflammation. I may use some of the oil in a pain salve or massage oil, and some in a blend for wound healing or irritated skin, depending on the other ingredients I add.

Interestingly, both German Chamomile and Yarrow, when distilled into essential oil, turn a beautiful shade of blue due to the presence on chamazulene which is a product of the distillation process in these oils. Chamazulene is also found in Blue Cypress and is known to be supportive in managing many types of inflammatory conditions, especially burns, itches and rashes. Itā€™s also believed to help reduce skin allergy symptoms.

Strawberry, Rosewater & Linden Blossom contains a mix of botanical extracts and naturally-sourced fragrance oils. It features Rose Absolute and Linden Blossom CO2. Of too much rose is a bit much for you, be assured that there is only a touch of Rose in this blend, and youā€™ll definitely notice the strawberry and Linden Blossom!

I had a request for shampoo bars, so I made a batch!

These Hair Therapy shampoo bars are made with a shampoo bar base, to which I added a blend of essential oils to support a healthy scalp and luxurious locks. The essential oils included are Rosemary cineole, Clary Sage, Bergamot, Atlas Cedarwood, Lavendin, and Copaiba. Some of the nourishing botanicals in the shampoo bar base include: coconut oil, Argan oil, shea butter, silk amino acids, honey, calendula extract, sunflower extract, aloe leaf extract, and marshmallow root extract.

I have five single bars averaging 3-4 ounces for $8 each, and two double-bar packs for $12 each.

Iā€™ll have these available at the Farmerā€™s Market next week, depending on the heat (it is currently looking a bit iffy and I donā€™t want them to melt!)
