Last but not least in our Staff Spotlight : Ellen

With over 11 years of experience at Shade Eyecare, where I've handled a wide range of office tasks, I've developed strong organizational skills and a keen eye for detail. Prior to my current role, I had a fulfilling career as an Administrative Assistant to the Director of Antibiotic Operations at GSK Pharmaceuticals. My entrepreneurial spirit shone through when my husband Bill and I co-owned and operated WM Machine Tool for 35 years, designing and manufacturing equipment for the pharmaceutical industry. Family is at the heart of everything I do, and I'm grateful to have three amazing children and five loving grandchildren who keep me on my toes. When I'm not working or spending time with loved ones, you can find me tending to my garden, curled up with a good book, or planning the next family vacation. My loyal companion, Ava, is always by my side, and I enjoy dinners with friends and the occasional shopping spree.

Next in the staff spotlight is our receptionist, Lori.

With 34 years of experience in eyecare, including 18 years at Shade Eye Care, I've built a life in the charming Bechtelsville , where I've lived my whole life in the surrounding area. When I'm not cheering on my grandkids at one of their many sporting events, you can find me jamming to classic rock, discovering new local bands, or getting my hands dirty in the garden. I also love to crochet and work on puzzles in my free time. My husband Tim and I are beaming with pride over our 10 grandkids, and we feel grateful to be surrounded by such a lively community.

Continuing our staff spotlight: our biller Jen.

I’ve been with Shade Eyecare for 10 years, but in the field for about 20 and in those years between retail optical and private practice, I’ve covered just about all aspects of the office. When I started with Shade I was a technician and scribe but eventually made my way over to the billing side of things. I relocated to Winter Haven, FL in 2022 but have been blessed enough to be able to do my job remotely. I am so grateful for that.
In my free time, I shoot wildlife photography at the many reserves here in Central Florida and I also perform with the Lakeland Concert Band. I love to cruise now that we are so close to many ports, too!
At home, you can usually find me with a nose in a book, taking care of our Corgis, or hanging out with family and neighbors.

Next in our staff spotlight - Our Technician and Optician, Amy

With 28 years of experience in the optical industry, I've had the privilege of working in every facet, from lab technician to optician, and doctors' technician, and I take pride in helping people see the world more clearly. There's something rewarding about working with the elderly, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in their lives. When I'm not dispensing glasses or discussing lens options, you can find me curled up with a good book, stitching away on my latest cross-stitch project, or experimenting with art. I'm also a sucker for a good mobster movie, a true crime podcast, or a high-energy punk rock playlist. And let's be real, I love a good dad joke – the cornier, the better – I'm a sucker for an eye-roll (pun intended)! Giving back to the community is important to me, and I'm proud to volunteer at the Literacy Council and as a Sighted Volunteer for Be My Eyes, helping to make a difference in people's lives in different ways. Next in our staff spotlight .... Dr. Yujia Jones

Dr. Jones has spent most of her life in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Dr. Jones attended The College of New Jersey and went on to obtain her masters and doctorate from the State University of New York College of Optometry.
Dr. Jones trained in pediatric optometry, vision therapy, low vision and ocular disease at various locations including Ezra Medical Center in Brooklyn, the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Wenzhou Eye Hospital in China. More recently, she has continued her education to focus more on dry eyes and ocular disease with additional certifications in scleral lenses and orthokeratology.

In addition, Dr. Jones was involved in various research projects and received her master’s degree in Vision Science after completing a study that looked to help glaucoma patients regain functionality.

When not at work, Dr. Jones enjoys tennis, gardening, and spending time with her husband and two kids.

We will be starting a Staff Spotlight series... starting off with Dr. Michele Shade-Hinchliffe.

Dr. Shade has over 20 years' experience in diagnosing and treating general eye disease. She has extensive training and certification in specialty contact lenses and related complications specifically, orhtokeratology lenses, keratoconus lenses, hybrid contact lenses, bifocal contacts and cosmetic lenses. She also has enhanced training in ocular nutrition, especially in prevention of age-related eye disease and dry eye.

Dr. Shade graduated from Richard Stockton College in 1983 with a Bachelor's Degree in biology. She then attended New England College of Optometry, graduating with a Degree in Optometry in 1989. She received the Fisons Award for Clinical Excellence. She completed an additional voluntary residency at Lebanon VA Medical Center in Hospital-based optometry and geriatric optometry. She then worked in private practice from 1990 to the present.

Shade Eyecare purchased the current practice in 1994. The practice is the oldest eyecare practice in the town of Pottstown, dating back to the late 1930’s when Dr. Dengler first started seeing patients.

Dr. Shade is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Pennsylvania Optometric Association and the Bucks-Montgomery Optometric Society. She served as the Treasurer and President for the Bucks – Montgomery Optometric Society, where she was the Young Optometrist for the year in 1999 and Optometrist of the Year in 2002. Dr. Shade has continued to serve on the Bucks-Montgomery Optometric Society board since 1996.

She has also served on the Advisory Panel for Women Excel of the YWCA of Pottstown for 6 years. She organized the annual Women Excel Expo event. She is currently a member.

Dr. Shade grew up in the Pottstown area and has lived here most of her adult life. She enjoys jewelry making and walking in her spare time

Just had an incredibly empowering experience! I’ve been learning about RayBan Meta (smart glasses) and was excited to recommend it to patients who need help doing everyday tasks because of low vision. Meta offers Be My Eyes. I decided to sign up as a sighted volunteer and got my first call just a few minutes ago! I helped a man make spaghetti for dinner! I saw everything from his perspective and was able to help pick the right pot, set the stove and choose the right pasta!
