One thing we hate to do as providers is service equipment that has not been kept clean. But this is a big problem for patients too. You do not want to put a dirty boot on a limb that may have ulcerations or lesions. That dirty boot could infect that limb and cause a cellulitis infection. If you have never had one, be thankful. They are painful and dangerous. Many of our patients end up in the hospital with these infections. So keep the boots and sleeves clean for your own sake.

As we all deal with the Quarantine, and news stories of equipment shortages, we have addressed this issue. We use exclusively Compression Pumps from Bio Compression Systems. They are located in New Jersey. So no foreign manufactures. They get to us quickly, and repairs and service is extremely quick. Other companies use pumps made in Korea or China. Not us. Made in the USA is the way to go.

To deal with Lymphedema, you do a multi-fasciated approach to treatment. A good Lymphedema Pump, Elevation, Compression stockings, and Exercise. To do less leads to failure.

Having provided over 6,000 Lymphedema Compression Pumps, I can not emphasize the importance of cleaning the equipment. The Bio Compression sleeves have an easy to clean vinyl material. You should wipe it out every few weeks with soap and water. It dries quickly, and minimizes the possibility of infections when you have open lesions. Sleeves made by Flexitouch are a soft, cloth like material. This can be a breeding ground for bacterial. Always wear something between you and the sleeve. Take the time to thoroughly clean the material and give it time to dry. It will take time due to the nature of the material.

Maintenance of your Lymphedema Pump is important. The pumps just need to be dusted once in awhile. But the boots really need to be cleaned often. If you have any drainage in the boot, that needs to be cleaned up ASAP. Otherwise the smell will set into the fabric. Soap and water works well. For bigger stains, bleach is better. You do not want to have an open wound on your limb to be infected by your bodies own waste sitting in a compression boot or sleeve.
