Community Traffic Safety
Hi, my name is Tara DeStefano and I am a Community Traffic Safety Project Coordinator with the Highway Safety Network for PennDOT District 5-0. So what does all that mean and why the heck does anyone care?? My role is outreach when it comes to traffic safety. My goal is to get to ZERO....ZERO traffic crashes and ZERO fatalities. I get the message out about the importance of safety when it comes to traveling in PA, be it by car, bike or on foot. If it’s a traffic topic, I have an accompanying safety message. If there’s an audience to speak with, I will. It doesn’t matter the circumstances I will promote traffic safety....just ask my son.
Did you ever wonder why you hear traffic crashes called “crashes” rather than “accidents”? [1] The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines an accident as: “an unforeseen and unplanned event or circumstance.”Yet most traffic crashes are due to human error, whether it is because of impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding or even driver inattention. A crash because of impaired driving is not unforeseen. A crash because of distracted driving is not unforeseen, nor is a crash caused by speeding or drowsy driving. A fatality because a person didn’t wear a seat belt is foreseeable. All of these actions are known to cause crashes and fatalities. The end result of these actions is foreseeable and preventable.
So what is the point to this page? I will use it to promote traffic safety messages and use it to highlight what is going on in the counties that I cover (Berks, Lehigh and Schuylkill). It is also a way for people to contact me to request programming and presentations or just ask questions about traffic safety.
Thanks for stopping by and feel free to say HI on my wall! :)
