📚 Did you know your brain wasn’t originally “built” for reading? Humans have only been reading for about 5,500 years—yet today it’s one of our most essential skills.
A new meta-analysis of over 3,000 people scanned with fMRI reveals the incredible brain network behind reading. It shows how different parts of the brain work together to piece letters into syllables, syllables into words, and words into meaning.
One standout finding: the cerebellum—better known for movement—lights up during nearly every type of reading task. It even activates differently depending on whether we’re reading aloud or silently. This research also offers clues to why some people struggle with dyslexia or other reading difficulties.
