Sometimes, we get ahead of ourselves, looking beyond the basics - looking for that miniscule 'thing' that we hope will put us over the edge and 'on top' of where we'd like to be.
While this is admirable, often, returning to the basics - nutrition, fitness, sleep, person and work relationships, leisure and laughter - these are some of the foundational things we forget about. But in truth, these are the things we always need to keep a focus on because they are the foundations of what keeps us feeling and functioning at our best.

Always touch back in the basics, to make sure you're doing them, before reaching beyond for those 'new things'.

Most of us go through life and only stop when we begin to feel pain. Some of us mask it, others take the bull by the horns and do something about it.
From stretching and strengthening, to nutrition, hydration and adding overall movement to your day, don't let yourself rest and rust.

Motion is lotion!

Keep that body moving.

Happy Memorial Day. Be safe, have fun, and remember what this day means to those who have made the honorable sacrifice.

Chiropractic care is an ideal way to help your body maintain optimal health. From keeping muscles responsive and supple, to ensuring joints are moving smoothly against one another, a healthy and functioning nervous system has a downstream affect of allowing the body to 'feel like its moving easier'. When the nervous system is less stressed, you just feel better, move better, have reduced pain, improved range of motion and have overall better durability during the day.
I'd sign up for that!

Ah, the age-old question.
Often, we need to do a combination of both.
If you find you are 'constantly stretching' something, yet don't seem to be getting anywhere, it is highly likely that you are stretching too much. In this instance, you need to add strength to the muscles instead of just stretching.

Think of this as a teeter-totter. Where one side is stretching and the other is strengthening.

We don't get enough outside time as adults. We're working constantly in our jobs and are running around with errands, kids in sports, etc.
Going for a walk, remembering to eat lunch, and chatting with a friend - all while taking that walk, is a perfect way to achieve balance in your otherwise chaotic lifestyle.

Many people overlook the benefits of walking.
It's not something 'for old people', rather we can all benefit from a few extra steps.
Why?
Read the caption above - we should all add a few extra steps every day to maximize these benefits.

Often, when you look at a friend who seems to 'have everything going for them' when it comes to their health journey, chances are, what you see is only the good stuff.
What you do not see is the struggles every day in the gym. The countless sets, reps, changes in weight, exercises and varied fitness along the way.
It is a journey to get the body to where you are happy with it and you constantly need to maintain it.
So, rather than 'stop and start', why not be consistent - this way, you won't feel like you are pushing a rock uphill every time.

When we examine the joint-by-joint approach, we have to look at joints above and below the joint of pain.
For example, if you have knee pain, we have to look up at the hip, or below at the ankle.
Why?
Because when one joint works harder than it's supposed to, another joint can 'shake loose', losing its stability in the process and begin to cause compensatory pain.
So, while you may have knee pain, it is important to address the hip and ankle to ensure everything is working in harmony, as it should.

One of the best ways to keep your weight in check is by getting adequate sleep. Poor sleep stresses the body, not allowing it to achieve adequate REM sleep, which is where the body begins to achieve ideal growth and repair of damaged tissues.
Many of us are getting 5-6 hours, but we need to hit 7-8 on average. Athletes may need even more than this to help improve recovery.

For some of us, sitting is the enemy.
A slight weakening of the lower back muscles, maybe some missed time at the gym, or travel for work or leisure - and all of a sudden, you feel like you're 100 years old.

My solution is the trusty couch pillow! There's always one going spare, so snap it up and place it either high or low behind the small of your back. Adjust it as necessary, but by doing this, you support the area of your body in need of it most.

There, now you're 'back' on track.
