How does MFR differ from traditional Massage?

Traditional massage therapy uses lotion or oils to slide and glide over the muscles. Myofascial Release is an integrated “whole body” treatment that provides “total physical, emotional and energetic” healing. A Myofascial Release Therapist is aware that pain is often caused by excessive tightness of the connective tissue within the body, creating pressure on pain sensitive structures. The goal of treatment is to reduce or eliminate this tightness which is accomplished by specialized techniques unwinding your tension and tightness, re-balancing your body and helping it to let go of whatever is related to that tension, by releasing and creating space for growth and change, thereby allowing
increased postural alignment
increased energy
increased body awareness
increased flexibility and strength
decreased pain
feeling more balanced physically, mentally and emotionally
(to name a few, as there are many results that may come from MFR)

Myofascial Release provides a comprehensive individualized treatment for the relief of pain, restoration of posture, and the return to function. Utilizing a method called John F. Barnes’ Myofascial Release to address problems that have not responded to previous surgeries, therapies, and medications, bringing about positive and lasting changes. While The Bodywork Studio can effectively help people who have unsuccessfully tried other interventions and for those who are seeking a fresh approach to a new problem will also find success, not all clients come as a result of pain. Many are simply looking to regain a quality of life that they are missing.

What is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial Release (MFR) is a highly effective hands on technique that addresses the fascial system, utilizing gentle sustained pressure into the fascia restrictions to eliminate pain & restore motion.

The fascia is a three dimensional web of connective tissue that runs from head to toe without any interruption, surrounding and penetrating every muscle, bone, organ, nerve, blood vessel, and cell. Due to its continuous nature, each part of the entire body is connected to every other part by the fascia, like the yarn in a sweater. A restriction can be felt in far reaching areas, and present itself in many ways including pain, numbness, tingling, headache, and loss of mobility.

Without restriction, the fascia is relaxed, hydrated, and moves with fluidity. When we experience physical trauma via injury or surgery, scarring, and inflammation, the fascia becomes restricted and the tension may affect the rest of the body. As a John Barnes MFR therapist, I take a whole body approach in every session, and look to address the root cause of the issue instead of just treating the symptom which often leads to longer lasting results. For example, if your primary complaint is neck pain, I may feel I need to release restrictions in the hips first because every part of the body is connected to the fascial web.

“Regardless of the specific cause of myofascial restrictions, the resulting detrimental health effects are common to all. Sustained contraction creates a tourniquet-like constriction of the circulatory system and obstructs its capability to provide nutrients, oxygen, fluidity, and energy. This tourniquet like effect also hampers the lymphatic systems ability to remove waste products from these affected areas of the body.

These areas will eventually begin to harden and create more permanent restrictions that sooner or later develop symptoms of pain, inefficient and/or chaotic physiology, and chronic edema—often resulting in the loss of ease of movement. All of these can have a negative effect on general mental well-being and quality of life.

When your fascial system is not functioning, you lose more than range of motion. The cells within the area of the restriction lose the capability to express their computational power and communicate normally. This is a very scientific way of saying that fascial restrictions can affect your sense of peace and happiness, shut down your intuition, and inhibit your ability to understand.”

Myofascial Release is a very effective hands-on technique, which provides sustained pressure and stretch combined with movement to “melt” and unravel our myofascial restrictions, to help eliminate pain, restore motions, and enhance your ability to relax.

Our bodies are talking to us all the time - that recurring headache, the knot in your stomach, low back pain, thightness in your jaw, etc.
That is your body telling you something is off or causing stress. Does it come or go when you are around certain people or in certain situations, or maybe it started after your lost someone you love. We hold a lot of emotions in your tissues.
Stress, trauma, inflammation all cause our fascia to tighten up, which can cause a lot of pain on our bodies.
MFR can help you reconnect your body and mind, helping you achieve a more active, pain free lifestyle.
