Did you know, a tongue tie requires a TEAM to get feeding on the right track. If you had a release without feeding therapy, it’s likely the missing link. Find a holistic OT or SLP with expertise in infant tethered oral tissues 🥳
The why:
A tongue tie release alone only gives range of motion, but does nothing to change tongue function. Compensations have already formed, which is problematic for feeding now and feeding in the future. That’s right, feeding is developmental just like walking and talking! And if we don’t have a strong foundation, it can impact future feeding milestones. Poor tongue function also fails to provide the important scaffolding for oral development and airway health (ie, a weak tongue rests on the floor of the mouth = high palate, shallow nasal space, and mouth breathing).
The impact of tethered oral tissues also manifests throughout the entire body because of the fascial system, creating imbalances, impacting breathing, bowel movements, contributing to colic, reflux, interfering with typical infant movements important for strength, sensory processing, and reflex activation— all of which are important to child development. 👶🏼👶🏾
Sometimes a release alone gets a “good enough” latch… for a little while. Maybe pain resolves, baby can get a deeper latch that is more effective at stimulating a letdown. But as they grow, symptoms of dysfunction return, or become more apparent. Don’t wait and see, and be skeptical of anyone who tells you these things work themself out. That is absolutely not true.
As a SLP + IBCLC, I have a unique scope to support littles with oral ties of all ages, which means that I see the manifestations of ‘no therapy’ in toddlers and school-age kids. And I have also seen how early intervention can set these babies up for success.
