With coming up on Thursday, September 28th, it is important for us to take the time to recognize the facts! Penicillin is the MOST COMMON drug allergy, and a true penicillin allergy is serious- killing about 400 people A YEAR. About 10% of all US patients report having an allergic reaction to a penicillin-based antibiotic in their past, but when formally evaluated by an allergist, 9/10 of those patients are not actually allergic! 80% of patients with a penicillin allergy lose their sensitivity after 10 years, which is why many people who have an allergic reaction in childhood are not actually allergic as an adult. If you believe that you have a penicillin allergy, do not hesitate to see a board-certified allergist for testing, as avoiding penicillin and related medications may be less effective when treating infections. Testing involves a series of skin prick tests, and/or an oral challenge to completely rule out the allergy. If you do end up being allergic to penicillin, your physician will discuss an emergency plan with you, as well as what medications to take/avoid in the future!

Since 1984, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has declared May to be “National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month.” It is a peak season for people with asthma and allergies and a perfect time to educate patients, family, friends, co-workers, and others about these diseases.

Flu vaccines for 2021/22 season is now available!!!

The CDC continues to recommend an annual Influenza vaccine, with an inactivated version (not live) for EVERYONE >6 months of age, but especially those with asthma, COPD, respiratory problems, heart issues, and other chronic medical problems, pregnant moms, and those who have a compromised immune system.

Fluzone (High Dose) vaccine for people 65+ to help promote a stronger immune response to the flu than the regular version.

Flulaval and Flucelvax are expected to be available mid- September.

Flulaval Quadrivalent (4 strain- Preservative free) vaccine is designed to help protect people 6 months of age and older against 4 different strains of the flu. This vaccine is designed to help protect children 6 months of age and older who need a preservative free option. Egg allergic individuals can now safely receive the regular flu vaccine.

Flucelvax Quadrivalent (4 strain) vaccine is designed to help protect people 2 years of age and older against 4 different strains of the flu.

There may be restrictions based on insurance coverage. PPO/ Medicare/ Sharp HMO can get the Flu vaccine in our office. Arch HMO/ Veteran Affairs/ Tricare need to get the vaccine with their primary care office, per plan policy. Please send us a message via the patient portal, should you have any questions.

Vaccine visits do not required an office encounter, but to ensure a speedy visit, it can be combined with your routine office visit, or by calling the office to set up an appointment.
