COMMUNITY HEALTH IMPROVEMENT WEEK
Community Health Improvement Week during the first week in June honors health professionals both in hospital settings and those who work more closely with communities.

Community health professionals work closely with public health organizations, area leaders, hospitals, and clinics to guide neighborhoods, urban and suburban areas to improve overall health. Many of these professionals serve on boards and volunteer in an outreach capacity, too. They may focus on at-risk populations or make directed efforts to improve specific health concerns in a community. Some of those focused areas may include:

early maternity care
diabetes screening and care
infant screenings
mental health screenings
elder care
vaccines
health awareness programs
obesity
These healthcare heroes advocate for their communities, too. When a community as a whole is healthy, they are also economically healthy. Their community remains strong and able to face obstacles, too.

HOW TO OBSERVE
Learn more about your community health professionals. Thank them for their dedication. Attend seminars or events they sponsor or promote. Use to join the conversation.

NATIONAL CAMPING MONTH
National Camping Month in June is an excellent time to pack up your gear and experience nature.

Whether you like roughing it or prefer to have a few modern conveniences when heading out to the trail, it’s important to keep a few things in mind.

1. Make sure you have plenty of freshwater or a freshwater source.
2. Take a first aid kit and that it is stocked.
3. Pack waterproof matches.
4. Take non-perishable food such as granola bars, jerky, peanut butter, chocolate bars, and dried fruits, especially if you are not taking a cooler.
5. Pack fruits, vegetables, and meats separately and keep chilled in a cooler.
6. Include sunblock, even for cloudy days.
7. Rain gear, jackets, and blankets are necessary for cooler weather.

Around the country, there are a variety of campsites available. The more modern campsite includes showers and recreational facilities. These often include water hookups and parking pads for RVs and campers and cabins to rent as well as more primitive sites with no electrical hookups designed for tent usage. Other parks only allow primitive camping and require everything you pack into the park to be packed out. So, seriously consider your needs if you are hiking into the park for your stay. These are not for the glampers.

NATIONAL FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE MONTH
Add color to your meals during National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month in June. As the peak season for many early garden crops find their way into markets, it’s an excellent time to take advantage of these freshly picked fruits and vegetables.

Berries and salad items come to mind first, but don’t hesitate to try exotic produce, too. As we head into a season where more variety is available, our family gets to enjoy the benefits of early summer’s bounty in vibrant color.

From zucchini and tomatoes, leafy greens, onions, and avocado, each provides added fiber, protein, and vital nutrients. Whether we eat them as a snack, on a salad or in smooth, it’s important to have five servings of fruit and vegetables per day.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Skip the canned and frozen aisle and check out the delicious fresh fruits and vegetables coming into the grocery, farmers markets, and even your garden every day in June. Maybe visit a pick-your-own-fruit-and-vegetable farm and bring home the fruits of your labor. Savor the goodness of these delicious foods and use to share on social media.
