This week I’m focusing on working memory 🧠, executive functioning ☑️, and self-advocacy skills 🙋‍♂️ in the context of following spoken directions. 🗣 I made this visual 👀 so my students can walk themselves through helpful steps when following complex directions. It not only helps them improve in their ability to successfully follow spoken directions, but their ability to ask for repetition and clarification when it’s needed. 🙌🏻

Did you pick up bubbles at the RISE Kids Fair today? Here’s how you can use bubbles to promote speech and language development! 💬

🧠 Receptive Language:
- Teach body parts: blow the bubbles on your child’s feet, hands, belly, etc.
- Practice following directions: “stomp the bubbles” or “pinch the bubbles.”
- Practice sequencing: “first dip, then blow” or “clap your hands before you pop a bubble.”

🗣 Expressive Language:
- Use actions words to talk about what you did: “I blew the bubbles” or “I popped the bubbles.”
- Use prepositions (“in, on, up, down, high, low, far, near”) and descriptors (“wet, sticky, big, small”).
- Sentence expansion: “more bubbles…want more bubbles…I want more bubbles please.”

👥 Pragmatic (Social) Language:
- Practice taking turns blowing and popping the bubbles: “my turn” or “your turn.”
- Practice asking for help: “open please” or “Can you blow more bubble?”
- Talk about feelings while playing: “I love playing with bubbles, they make me feel happy. I saw your eyes get really big, that bubble made you feel excited.”

👄 Articulation:
- Early developing sounds (/p, b, m, n, h, w, d/: “pop, up, boom, bubble, more, on, high, wow, down.”

Skye and Chase went swimming with SHARKS!! 😱🌊🦈

We had SO much fun with this simple activity. It allowed us to get in a TON of repetitions of our target word “swim” using our cards. 🏊

We even practiced a few other /s/-blends:
🔵Skye
🔵Splash
🔵Scoot (away from those sharks!)
🔵Small (vs. big shark)
🔵Snack (Chase is not a shark snack!”)
🔵Snatch/Snap (shark sounds)

Let’s talk about using ✨ Minimal Pairs✨ to work on speech sound skills and phonological awareness.

Minimal pairs are two words that are only different by one sound. ☝️

Choosing minimal pairs is easy! Use your child’s target sound and their typical error for that same sound.

For example, if your child typically produces /t/ for /k/ you can use the following minimal pairs:
🔹Tap/Cap
🔹Tape/Cape
🔸Sit/Sick
🔸Late/Lake

Play & talk about how your minimal pair targets are different. 🗣
