According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, nearly 30 million adults in the U.S. have obstructive sleep apnea, and an estimated 80% of cases are still undiagnosed. That means many people may be dealing with poor sleep, daytime fatigue, and other health concerns without realizing the cause.

One common warning sign is loud or frequent snoring. Sleep apnea can also involve gasping for air during sleep, waking up tired, morning headaches, or feeling sleepy during the day.

Because the airway, jaw, and oral structures all play a role in breathing during sleep, dental professionals can sometimes help identify signs that deserve further evaluation. In some cases, oral appliance therapy may be recommended for patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, or for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP.
