MCORE Foundation

MCORE Foundation Our mission is the education and prevention of sudden cardiac arrest in our youth. MCORE Foundation screenings provide EKG and Echo testing.

The MCORE Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the education, research and prevention of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in our youth, regardless of their ability to pay. Our mission is to provide all families with the facts about, sudden cardiac arrest, relevant family history and what causes SCA to occur in younger populations. All screenings are all preformed by registered diagnostic cardiac sonographers from accredited institutions and local hospitals and read by pediatric cardiologists. Over the past 5 years, the MCORE Foundation has grown considerably. Since 2014 our services have expanded, and we now are providing screenings annually to over 5000 youth ages 12-22 in 7 states. Our programs continue to expand and currently include the following: hospital programs, partner foundation programs, school (middle school, high school and college) screening & training. The MCORE Foundation is a dedicated 501(c)3 organization that works with local communities in all these signature areas to raise awareness and funding for our screening, research and education programs. SCA is not a heart attack. Each year thousands of children, teens and young adults suffer SCA from an undetected heart condition, which can also be caused by a blunt blow to the chest. Each triggers a fatal heart rhythm—an electrical malfunction—that causes the heart to stop. The MCORE Foundation aims to prevent sudden cardiac arrest in our youth through education and by screening for undetected heart conditions that could lead to SCA. SCA is a leading medical cause of death under 25, the #1 killer of student athletes and the leading cause of death on school campuses. This is unacceptable.

“Our daughter had always been healthy — or so we thought. 💔

"In February 2024, we took her to a youth heart screening in Highland, IL, sponsored by MCORE Foundation and the Greg Holthaus Memorial Fund. The test was quick and easy — but the results changed everything.
Her screening showed an abnormal result. Further testing at St. Louis Children's Hospital revealed she had two congenital heart defects — SVD (superior sinus venosus defect) and ASD (atrial septal defect) — as well as a misplaced vein that required open-heart surgery.

Her surgery took place on December 5, 2024, and the surgeon told us afterward that it was a good thing we caught it when we did. Her heart had already been working overtime, and without intervention, she could have faced serious complications soon.

We can’t put into words how thankful we are — this screening saved our daughter’s life. ❤️
Thank you to MCORE Foundation and the Greg Holthaus Memorial Fund for giving families like ours the gift of early detection. Please — get your kids screened. It could save their life.”

PLEASE READ!!! The Greg Holthaus Memorial Fund’s Wiffleball Tournament is our biggest fundraiser of the year. Please read below the dotted line, as this message was given to us from a parent whose child was screened at one of our events in 2024. The money we raised in 2023 made this screening possible and saved her life from future medical complications if it had been left undiagnosed. Scroll down to our earlier post from today on how you can donate and possibly win some great prizes! Drawing will be this Sunday, October 5th! Your donation will go towards our cardiac screenings in 2026.

Our daughter had always been a healthy kid, or at least we thought she was. She regularly participated in any activity she possibly could. Softball, basketball, volleyball and gymnastics were some of the physical activities she especially enjoyed. She never gave us any indication that there was a problem with her heart. She never had unusual signs of fatigue, no shortness of breath and no other symptoms that raised any red flags and caused her to be unable to participate in those physical activities. On Monday, February 19, 2024 we took our daughter to the heart screening in Highland at Holly's House of Hope that the Greg Holthaus Memorial Fund and MCore Foundation teamed up to have for the kids in our community. We didn't take her for a heart screening because we had any indication that she had a problem with her heart. The only reason we took her was because I believed in and respected Gail's work. After hearing her story and knowing what their family went through, I was going to do everything in my power to prevent that from happening to one of my little girls. So if Gail said this testing was important, I was going to have our girls tested as soon as we possibly could. With our oldest daughter just turning 12 years old in January this was our first opportunity to get her tested. The testing process was quick and easy. For the testing our daughter laid down on their little bed/table, they hooked up some cords to her chest and they took some videos and images of her heart. We were told that we would get her results in an email in a few weeks. In a few weeks I received that email. I opened that email and logged in. I will never forget that feeling that I felt when I saw the word "ABNORMALITY" on her test result. My world stopped. My head started spinning with so many questions...How can this be happening to our little girl? What do I do now? What exactly is wrong? How can we fix this? So I quickly called our pediatrician's office for guidance. They hooked us up with an appointment at Children's Hospital in St. Louis, MO for later that day so we could have some more detailed testing done. This would give us more answers. At that appointment we found out that our daughter had a hole in her heart. More specifically the doctors called her condition SVD (Superior Sinus Venosus Defect) and ASD (Atrial Septal Defect). This was a condition she was born with. This information was such a surprise to us. We had no idea that she had this condition. They said normally if a child is born with holes in their heart those holes grow shut as the child gets older, but in this case hers did not grow shut. They also found a vein that needed to be relocated to make her heart work more efficiently. The doctor told us this will most definitely need to be fixed in the next few years with open heart surgery. Her open heart surgery was performed at Children's Hospital in St. Louis, MO on Thursday, December 5, 2024. When the surgeon came out to touch base with us after the surgery it was a huge relief to hear him say her surgery was a success! He went on to tell us that it was sure a good thing that we caught this! While in surgery he noticed that her right ventricle portion of her heart was significantly enlarged due to the fact that it was working so much harder to keep up. He believed that it wouldn't have been long and she would have had serious troubles. I cannot express to you enough how important this testing is! I know from our experience this testing saved my little girl's life. We will forever be grateful for these programs (Greg Holthaus Memorial Fund and MCore Foundation) and the work they do!! Get your kids tested!!
