Hazel Berry Baker
Our beloved, Hazel Berry “Win” Baker died on November 12, 2025, following a long illness. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ellen Pollard Baker, parents Reverend Alexander B. Berry, Jr. and Hazel Windley Berry Bullman Palmer and sister, Elva Berry Yates (Alexander). She is survived by her husband of 61 years, George Edward “Eddie” Baker; her sons George Edward “Ted” Baker, Jr. (Kim) and Daniel Louis Baker (Ronda) and daughters Windley Baker Morley (Tres) and Suzannah Baker Stora (Brad); nine grandchildren (Molly, Daniel, Caroline, Juliana, Anna Sydney, Gracie Scott, Avery, Izzy, and John Edward); five great-grandchildren (Addie, Audrey, Everleigh, Joseph, and Benjamin). She is also survived by her brothers, Sandy Berry (Gibbie), Tim Berry (Linda), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Win grew up in Charles City County, Virginia, graduated from Charles City High School, and studied at the University of Mary Washington, and University of South Carolina Upstate, where she received a Bachelor of Arts. She and Eddie, who met at a high school 4H convention, spent many years in the Carolinas before returning to Clarkesville, Virginia when they retired in 2001. In addition to traveling throughout the world, Win and Eddie loved spending time in New York City, where Eddie worked, as well as Oak Island, North Carolina where they enjoyed hosting family and friends at the beach. Win had a great faith in God and in people and never stopped looking for ways to make the world a better place. A committed servant leader, she embraced each of the schools her children attended and the churches where she lived, running youth initiatives, coaching soccer, singing in the choir, playing handbells, and serving in leadership. She also volunteered and served as a board member at several organizations including the Mecklenburg County Community Services Corporation, Southside Virginia Community College Foundation, and the Literacy Council of Union County where she was the founding chairperson, as well as the Wake County 4H’s Wake Up to Agriculture initiative, where she earned recognition as the North Carolina Volunteer of the Year. During her time in Weddington, NC, she was elected and served as a member of the Union County School Board and worked as the Weddington Correspondent for the Monroe Enquirer Journal. In Clarksville, VA she opened a boutique retail booth called the Bag Ladies. Win adored the arts and theatre, golfing and playing bridge, and watching VCU basketball, but mostly she cherished her friends and family, especially her grandchildren. Always the last one to leave church, she loved great conversation and congregation, and was not afraid to discuss hard topics.
To honor her memory, please take on a leadership role, serve as a volunteer, or look for opportunities to care for those most vulnerable in your community. Special thanks to Enlight Hospice of VA and the medical staff of Brandermill Woods for their care throughout Win’s final days. A celebration of life will be held at Salisbury Presbyterian Church in Midlothian, Virginia on January 2, 2026 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Center at Virginia Commonwealth University
