See Rufus Phillips, CEO of Association of Free & Charitable Clinics, guest column in Richmond Times Dispatch this week! We are honored to be Powhatan, Amelia, Cumberland and Chesterfield's health safety net.

"The math is straightforward; do we invest in clinics to manage a patient’s hypertension or diabetes in a clinic setting, or wait for them to suffer a crisis and pay $2,500 (or more) for an emergency room visit that the taxpayer or the hospital eventually absorbs? Research shows that when people lack insurance, they delay care, leading to avoidable hospitalizations and often crushing medical debt."

That means your investment in our care keeps neighbors healthier and working to better our community.

Free and charitable clinics are vital to the health of our community and economy. Still, rising health care costs, coupled with inadequate state funding and increased patient demand, have put their sustainability at risk. It’s an alarming situation for Virginia’s health care safety net. But it's...

On this maternal health awareness day, we're thankful for Virginia Physicians for Women and the volunteer FCP medical team that provides women's services to our uninsured and underinsured patients once a month. Many of these appointments have given women early diagnosis of cancers and appropriate preventative care they would otherwise go without.

Our More Neighbors, More Care project is seeing headway!

Thanks to wonderful partners, our doctors and providers will have a third exam room coming soon. This addition will help rotate patients more effectively and provide better quality patient care as take on Medicaid insured patients.

We've seen the carpet change to hardwood floors, plumbing needs being installed and new paint. Our mental health counselor (who previously occupied this space) has moved down the hall and still seeing patients.

We have truly enjoyed having our new medical coordinator, Shannon (right) and new nurse, Nicki (middle) join us along with Julie (left), an RN volunteering to do phlebotomy for us! Julie is also working with the American Heart Association and placed at FCP as a Community Connecter. A role dedicated to developing our programs and helping improve cardiovascular health right here in our rural community.

All have truly jumped in learning about FCP and are excited about the great work we do.

We're so proud to say Dawn, our Operations Director was accepted into the 2026 Community Health Center University. The CHCU aims to strengthen safety net leadership across Virginia. The program is offered in partnership between the Virginia Association of Free & Charitable Clinics and the Virginia Community Healthcare Association through the University of Richmond.

This will be the second person from FCP attending this year-long leadership program, our Executive Director, Elizabeth completed this in 2024. We're looking forward to the information Dawn learns to better our Clinic!

Many Veterans are surprised to learn that V.A. insurance does not include routine dental coverage, and the supplemental options available often cover only a small portion of care.

At the clinic, we’re here to help bridge that gap. If you’re a Veteran in need of affordable dental services or unsure of your options, reach out — you don’t have to navigate it alone. 💙

As 2025 comes to a close, we want to pause and say one simple thing: Thank you.

Because of supporters like you, patients received medical, dental, mental health, and nutrition support when they needed it most. These moments of care don’t happen by chance... they happen because our community shows up.

If you’re still considering a year-end gift, donations made, or postmarked, by December 31 will count toward 2025 giving. Donate online here: https://shorturl.at/GS5nA

As we reflect on this past year, we’re deeply grateful for everyone who gave, volunteered, shared our story, or followed along. You are part of what makes this work possible.

From all of us at the Free Clinic of Powhatan, thank you for being part of this story. We wish you a healthy new year!

We couldn't give patients their needed medication without the wonderful support from generous partners like Rx Partnership. The clinic was able to provide low-income, uninsured patients with free medication to treat a variety of chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension because of its connection.

We recently received our certificate of recognition from Rx Partnership during the Virginia Association of Free & Charitable Clinic’s annual conference in Roanoke this past November. We're so grateful for them!
