Step Onto My Mat Wellness - SOMM

Step Onto My Mat Wellness - SOMM A beyond the plate approach to wellness. I look at how all areas of your life are connected. It really began to inspire so many people. Thus SOMM grew even more.

Step Onto My Mat Wellness started as Step Onto My Mat, a blog that I, Stephie, started to share my yoga journey. On this blog I invited people to step onto my proverbial yoga mat where I shared my struggle with depression and abusive relationships and how I used yoga to heal. I then began to use it to share about the kickboxing classes that I was taking, and sometimes even teaching, and how that f

itness component was a big factor in my healing as well. Then I became a Beachbody coach and so on. In the meantime, I have added a couple of college degrees, a few more fitness certifications, stepped down from Beachbody coaching to branch out on my own with this wellness business. Meanwhile, Bob and I started dating, bought a house, and had a baby. He also became a personal trainer. So, we are happy to say that he is officially part of the Step Onto My Mat Wellness team! Not to say that he wasn't before, but he was more or less a quiet support to me and my journey, but now he is officially being added as my business partner and offering his services. Now, we are excited to ask you all to Step Onto our Fitness/Yoga/Training Mat and check out our services. Meet the owners Bob; Paramedic, Personal Trainer and Stephie Wharam;Certified Holistic Health Coach, Yoga Instructor, PiYo LIVE and Turbo Kick LIVE Instructor, Emergency Medical Technician, and elementary teacher. Zen & Yoga enthusiasts, wannabe homesteaders, lovers of nature, animals, wildlife, motorcycles, families and children, and self-proclaimed professional coffee drinkers on a mission to help people find health, happiness, wellness, and abundance in their lives! Just looking to LIVE life, each and every moment. Sharing our love and happiness with everyone. Hoping to help others find their own zen, peace, and happiness in their own lives. More about Stephie: Mama, wife, Certified Holistic Health Coach, yoga/meditation/fitness instructor, and elementary teacher. I am influenced by several yoga traditions, my formal college training with an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) with a specialty in Teacher Education, a Bachelors of Interdisciplinary studies with a minor of Religious Studies, Masters degree in teaching, my training and experience in Emergency Medical Services for more than 20 years, and my holistic health coach training. Before my love and passion for wellness education I had a HUGE passion for education with younger children. I started my college path with that in mind and completed my Associates then went on to work on my Bachelors and Masters at the same time in an advanced program with Virginia Commonwealth University. However, during that time I developed a passion to help others simply be well and feel good in their lives and bodies. My program was stopped just short of getting my teaching licence and I went on to pursue the wellness route. I later enrolled back into college to complete my Masters of Teaching with the goal to be a better Health Coach, Yoga and Meditation Teacher as well as teach in an Elementary School setting. I am proud to say I have achieved that goal and am now able to run a wellness business as well as teach in an elementary school.

Lately, I’ve been leaning into my after-work ritual. One that doesn’t involve scrolling or zoning out, but instead reconnects me to myself.
Each evening, I roll out my mat, sit with my breath, and let my body move through yoga asana. After some gentle yoga and stillness in meditation, I’ve started stream-of-consciousness journaling. Two prompts that have felt especially healing are:
• “I choose to let go…”
• “I forgive myself for…”

It’s been incredibly cathartic, like shedding layers I didn’t know I was carrying.

This space isn’t perfect, but it’s mine. A soft light, a few books, a bolster, a blanket, and time.

This is your gentle reminder: find your own way to unwind. Your nervous system deserves your attention. And your healing doesn’t have to come through habits that leave you feeling empty.

Make space. Even ten minutes. Breathe, move, write. You’re worth the time.

Sundays are my day for spiritual study, a time to dive deeper into authentic yoga texts and learn from those recognized as authentic yoga teachers.

While many today view yoga as a form of exercise, often pairing it with trends like dog yoga, goat yoga, or even alcohol, taking away from the authenticity of the spiritual practice. At its core, yoga is a profound guide to reconnecting with our true Self, beyond the ego, attachments, and worldly desires. It’s about peeling away the layers that obscure our authentic being, much like chipping away at a block of stone to reveal the sculpture within. As the story goes, a sculptor’s role is not to create the statue but to remove the excess stone to reveal the masterpiece that was already there, much like our true Self, hidden beneath the layers we accumulate over time.

The physical practice of yoga is a powerful tool to help us notice what we’re feeling in the moment. When we engage in poses, we often find ourselves faced with thoughts that tell us we’re not doing it correctly or that we should be pushing for a more advanced version of the pose. Our minds may also react to discomfort. Can we sit in that discomfort with nonjudgment, or do we give in too quickly? Through yoga, we learn to pause and simply take notice of what our mind is telling us, allowing us to create space between our reactions and our true response.

I used to believe my yoga practice belonged to the sunrise, an energizing start to the day, or to the evening, a ritual for rest. But lately, I’ve found my soul’s sweet spot in the quiet space after work. That golden hour pause where I can breathe, move intuitively, release the day’s weight, journal my thoughts into the ether, and settle into stillness. It’s become a sacred rhythm, a ritual I crave—like a deep exhale for the soul. Pure magic.

Lotus flower – The plant that cleans itself and can survive for hundreds of years!🙏

The lotus flower is not only one of the most spectacular aquatic plants, but also a symbol of purity, resilience and rebirth. Although it grows in dirty and muddy waters, its petals never get dirty - an amazing phenomenon of nature!

- The secret of self-cleaning
The lotus has a unique phenomenon called the lotus effect, which allows it to always remain clean. Its leaves and petals are covered in thousands of hydrophobic microscopic structures that repel water and dirt. When the water drops touch the plant, they roll off and remove dust and mud particles, making the lotus always flawless.

- The plant that is reborn after hundreds of years
Lotus is incredibly resilient. Its seeds can remain viable for hundreds of years and sprout even after being buried for centuries. In China, a lotus seed over 1,300 years old was discovered and successfully replanted!

- A sacred symbol in many cultures
•In Buddhism, the lotus flower symbolizes spiritual enlightenment because it grows out of muddy water but remains pure.
• In Ancient Egypt, it was considered a symbol of life and rebirth, as the lotus closes at night and blooms again in the morning.
• In India, it is the national flower and is associated with the goddess Lakshmi, a symbol of prosperity and beauty.

- Lotus inspired science
Researchers have used the lotus effect to create self-cleaning materials such as stain-resistant paints, water-resistant fabrics, and even antibacterial surfaces for hospitals.

Lately, I’ve been diving deep into somatic healing as I work toward my certification. This practice is all about reconnecting with the body to release stored stress, trauma, and tension-something I’ve found profoundly important in both my personal and professional life.

Somatic healing has been shaped by pioneers like Dr. Peter Levine, who developed Somatic Experiencing after working with war veterans, focusing on how trauma gets trapped in the nervous system. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score, has worked extensively with survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence, showing how trauma manifests physically. Dr. Pat Ogden, creator of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, integrates movement and mindfulness to help people heal, especially those with complex trauma histories.

The body remembers what the mind tries to forget. Learning how to listen is the first step toward healing. ~paraphrasing adapted from core ideas of trauma researchers and somatic healing circles.
