This week’s stress-less yoga tip ( #469):
Thanksgiving
A quote from Shiva Tigunait, PhD in a Himalayan Institute article:
“Gratitude born of trustful surrender is the quintessence of gratitude itself. It is unconditional. It means being grateful no matter what comes our way…”

Research at the University of Michigan & the University of California found those that practice gratitude had improved physical & mental health.
“People who were more grateful had lower blood pressure and heart rate, as well as greater feelings of appreciation toward others. The study found that optimism was also linked to health & mental benefits, such as better sleep quality and more positive expectations and reflections.”

—Gratitude, being thankful, counting our blessings, these all reduce stress.
We focus on the good, the love, the beauty of life, the joy.
Let go of the rest.
May you have much to be grateful for.

This week's stress-less yoga tip ( #467)
--Don’t you just love to see things like this!
Harvard Health Publishing’s newsletter, two weeks in a row, and again today, brought up meditation & yoga!
Last week’s article on meditation is posted here. This week’s special health report on hight blood pressure suggests relaxation techniques, meditation & yoga and even included 3 guided meditations in its content. Their newsletter today talked about mindful eating & its health benefits.

In earlier posts I’ve mentioned that 2005 Washington, DC conference I attended, where doctors from Georgetown, U of Massachusetts, U of California, Emory School of Medicine, John Hopkins School of Medicine, Stanford, U of Wisconsin-Madison, U of Toronto, U of Florida College of Medicine, Ohio State U, Duke, McGill & Cambridge U all spoke on the benefits of meditation to our health. What was really interesting about that is that even a research medical doctor from Merck, the pharmaceutical company, was involved in presenting!
Om to that:)

The best part about this guide is how quickly you can start enjoying the health benefits of meditation! It all starts with knowing how to meditate the RIGHT WAY!

This week's stress-less yoga tip ( #466):
Just read an article from a yoga mat company on the power of pausing. The author, Charlotte Bell, cited feelings & emotions associated with slow walks on the beach & walking meditation noting how one appreciates the feel of sand on the feet, shells, what the waves wash up. The practices made the author begin to slow down in daily life. And, a transformation took place as she noticed details in daily activities.

The article reminded me of those opposite days when we are almost physically running from one activity to another & the way it takes a toll on the body, and the contrast of the days when we can find time for stillness. Those days where we find stillness steer us to meditation where we still not just the body, but the mind.

The author talks about the definition of yoga “settling of the mind into silence.” The article focuses on being in the present, where the mind can settle into silence.
The author wraps up with the dichotomy of slowing down might actually make us more productive. Here are some of her daily suggestions, take a leisurely walk, practice a few yoga asanas, mindfully wash dishes, play with my cats, savor my dinner, mindfully drink a cup of tea.

In a nutshell her article describes mindfulness, that ability to be meditative in daily life with clear attention to each of the day’s tasks.

Slow down, I like the message. That’s a great start.
Not everyone takes the time for daily meditation. At least take time to slow down or practice mindfulness while doing a daily task. You’ll find the benefit:)

19/09/2022

This week's stress-less yoga tip ( #465):
One of the greatest gifts I’ve learned from yoga is karma yoga- The act of selfless giving, not expecting anything in return.
You just keep going. You don’t have expectations. The focus is on the act, not the results.
Your path becomes clear. It is clean since it is not colored by negative emotions. It is unencumbered since it is not tied to unfulfilled results. It is simply something tangible or intangible that you can give. It doesn’t diminish you by giving it away, you don’t lose, you gain from the act.
-So back to stress- when you just keep giving, you find this endless supply of hope. Wrap yourself in that hope and you know everything will be all right.

02/09/2022

This week's stress-less yoga tip ( #464):
—Meditating on Om (Aum)
The vibration of the universe which contains all other sounds.
A universal mantra.
The seed sound of the Anja chakra/3rd eye.
The Hatha Yoga Pradipika states that Om represents the four states of consciousness: conscious, sub conscious, unconscious & supraconscious.
This chakra is connected to pure mind, pure consciousness, the direct link to Ishvara, Brahman, God.
No wonder the Yoga Sutras suggest that meditating on Om is a direct path a short cut, that goes directly to the true self, pure consciousness.
This occurs with deep commitment, respect & reverence.
The sutras say remember the sound with deep feeling for the meaning of what it represents.
—In my meditation practice I like to begin with Om.
I find the vibration stabilizing & steadying.
It centers & focuses me, bring me inward.
And, it is soothing & calming.

This week's stress-less yoga tip ( #463):
A lot of the work we do in meditation is being in stillness to observe the mind & gain a better understanding of who we are. This may be one of our more useful tools to short circuit stress.
Some observations to consider while watching/observing the mind/thoughts:
-Do we have enough love, joy & fulfillment in our lives to counteract the stress
-Do we make the right choices to keep us out of stressful situations & relationships
-How useful is your support system
-What is in our control & what is not
-Do we take time daily for self care, quiet, calm
-What are our triggers for stress
-How do we react to stressors (always remember stress is the individual’s reaction to a stressor..and from last week's post, another blue space photo, this one of the Rappahannock River

This week’s stress-less yoga tip ( #462):
Blue Space - Psychology Today’s recent article on the calming benefits of water.
The article quotes research from around the world, outlining the benefits of being near water, lakes, rivers, coastlines & the effects on our mental health. They show lower risk of depression, aid in stress reduction, enhance well-being, help with issues like PTSD, addiction & cancer. They found it is not just being on water, but listening to recorded water sounds or seeing images of the sea can bring effects. One psychotherapist pointed out the sounds of waves help regulate our internal rhythm.
-Sound familiar? The rhythm of your mantra or the sound of breathing, so hum. It also brings to mind the yoga suggestion of meditating on vast open space & the serenity it creates.
Meditate and enjoy the stillness, spacious openness & soothing rhythm:)
