I pilgrimaged to see an ancient ash friend yesterday… i don’t know her age, but her girth exceeds the outstretched arms of 3 tall adults- so over 20ft, and each of her remaining 4 major trunks is an enormous tree itself, no sequoia, but the largest tree I’ve seen in Maine, hiding in plain site at bradbury park. Pownal was settled in 1680, & this tree may be over 300 yrs in age. I went to sit amongst her root system, to gain gleanings of being rooted, as I’m into the 2nd month of being grounded with an ankle injury. So much to be known about not being on 2 capable legs zipping about on terra firma.

4 weeks into ankle healing there’ve been days like this: gift of 1st class flight to put up my swollen leg going AK to Maine, friends’ to my Maine abode , food in fridge…ripe tomatoes , fresh corn, & bouquet on the counter a colleague coming over to treat me, a homeopathic remedy delivered by hand, the man driving the cement mixer down the road who popped on his flashers, hopped out & hauled my trash containers to the house- me on crutches bowing namaste - grateful; neighbors invite to yummy dinner & reconnection, my sister & bro in law arriving from VT to do some heavy lifting, along with my Maine bro- fam showing up in awesome ways to lend much needed hands, gift of a massage, sunshine & warm outside, running water, level ground, big moon glowing, my bones knitting while Diego perches in his fav tree. Deep appreciation for days like this🌻

Dryas!! Aka Einstein’s hair is an early succession plant on newly unglaciated terrain. Prolific, & magical in the light! I took these pics on the W side glacier trail with just before I lost my footing into a hole amongst the boulders covered by soapberry. I injured my ankle & did a lot of butt schooching to make my way back with Amy’s huge help, & other angels who were nearby. Somehow, Caleb Rowland managed to get his 4 wheeler way back amongst the boulder field to get me out…boulder extrication could be a new olympic sport! Ice & elevation into the big blue sky didn’t reduce the swelling, so 48 hrs later I drove out for xrays, sad to say a fibula avulsion fracture is mine - boot & crutches for a while now.

Mira helped her fav human, build a bike port for the old outhouse / now shed! Ta Da! It’s super sweet & can double as as an out of August rain workshop! Thanks again to for gifting me this piece of local herstory💜
