Why Wednesday: Kristen Cox – Dietary Aide / Activity Assistant
What inspired me to work in skilled nursing is my love for helping people. The most rewarding part of my job is being able to make others smile. A memorable moment that influenced me to stay in skilled nursing was bringing my kids to visit one of our residents and watching the resident’s face light up with pure joy—it was a moment I’ll never forget.
What I enjoy most about the team I work with is that we’re all a little weird and quirky, and that makes our workplace feel like family. The facility’s mission statement truly resonates with me because it focuses on making our elderly residents more comfortable and providing them with a great quality of life through strong family values.
The opportunities for growth I’ve found in this role include learning and experiencing new things that I wouldn’t have had the chance to otherwise. Working in this community hasn’t necessarily changed my perspective on healthcare, because there are good days and bad days—we simply take things one day at a time. My future goals are to continue growing in my current roles and to be as helpful as possible. What keeps me motivated every day is the residents and the amazing team I get to work with.

Story: The ladies enjoyed making some hearts made out of cardboard and chunky yarn. This helped them thrive by having them think about the direction of the yarn and how to place it on the cardboard. Great conversation was had by all as always.

Why Wednesday: Lauren Franklin – C.N.A
What inspired me to work in skilled nursing is caring for people who can’t care for themselves. Our residents rely on us to show up every day, and I wanted a career where what I do genuinely matters. What I find most rewarding is knowing my actions can impact someone’s day. The gratitude from residents reminds me why I chose this profession.
A memorable experience that influenced me to stay in skilled nursing isn’t just one specific moment—it’s the daily connections. We joke, laugh, and share both good and challenging days together, which creates meaningful bonds. I believe my work positively impacts residents by helping them feel safe, respected, and truly cared for. This job is not only physical but emotional as well.
I enjoy working with my team because they are supportive and understanding. We help one another when things become overwhelming, and we all share the same goal: providing the best possible care for our residents. We truly treat each other like family.
The facility’s mission statement resonates with me because it emphasizes dignity, respect, and high-quality care. I want every resident to feel important and valued. Through this role, I’ve grown in responsibility, communication, patience, and confidence. I’ve learned how to handle difficult situations, advocate for myself, and work effectively as part of a healthcare team. This experience has also motivated me to continue advancing in the medical field.
Working in skilled nursing has changed my perspective on healthcare by showing me how personal and emotional it truly is. I’ve learned that compassion is just as important as clinical skills, and I have gained a deep appreciation for everyone who works in long-term care.
My future goals are to continue building my skills as a CNA and eventually become an RN, while continuing to grow in an environment where I can make a difference. What keeps me motivated is knowing my residents depend on me and that my presence truly matters. We share a special bond that makes this work so meaningful.

Resident Feature: Loretta Lynn Schaffer
Loretta Lynn Schaffer was born on March 9, 1972. She typically starts her day between 7–8 a.m., enjoying a peaceful morning routine that includes relaxing in bed, watching TV, prayer, sipping coffee, and taking her morning medications. Loretta likes to dress nicely and enjoys having her nails done every other week.
At bedtime, Loretta prefers to sleep with her feet uncovered and a fan running. Her favorite foods and drinks include pizza, tea, and Pepsi. She isn’t a fan of spinach, broccoli, or anything green—lol!
Loretta previously worked as a housekeeper, where her main responsibility was thoroughly cleaning the areas assigned to her. She is Catholic and enjoys attending Bible studies here in our community.
One accomplishment Loretta is especially proud of is that she is walking again. Her hobbies and interests include going for rides, collecting gnomes, watching basketball and hockey, listening to country music (with Loretta Lynn as her favorite artist), singing, decorating, gardening, and more. Her favorite movie is The Breakfast Club. If given the opportunity to travel, Loretta would love to visit New Mexico.
Loretta enjoys conversing with others and sharing stories. She would like to thank the staff for taking care of her and meeting her needs.
Thank you, Loretta, for sharing part of your life and story with us. We are so glad you are a part of our community.
