Why Wednesday: Candace Cantrell, C.M.A.

What inspired me to work in skilled nursing is growing up in a family full of healthcare workers, but my biggest inspiration has always been my Memo Crain.

What I find most rewarding about my job is knowing that I’m coming to work each day to make a difference in our residents’ lives. One of my most memorable experiences is when residents are genuinely excited to see me after I’ve been off for a few days—they check in to make sure I’m okay, just like family would. Moments like those remind me how special the bonds we form here truly are.

My work positively impacts the residents by ensuring they receive the best care possible and that no task is ever left undone. What I enjoy most about the team I work with is that we’re all true team players who treat one another like family.

The Community’s mission statement resonates deeply with me because I treat every resident like family—I truly love them all as if they were my own. The opportunities for growth I’ve found in this role have been amazing. I began my career as a C.N.A. in 1997, and in 2020, I became a Certified Medication Aide.

Working here has changed my perspective on healthcare because every day brings something new. Not every day is sunshine and rainbows, but the good days make it all worth it. My goal for the future is to complete nursing school and become an RN.

What keeps me motivated to continue in skilled nursing is knowing that I make a difference every single day in our residents’ lives by providing the best care possible.

Resident Feature: Barry Everhart

Meet Barry Everhart! Barry was born on December 30, 1953. He’s an early riser who still enjoys staying up late. His morning routine includes drinking a cup of coffee, watching TV, washing up, taking his medicine, and having a smoke.

Barry’s go-to outfit is a comfortable pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt. His favorite meal is fried chicken—always paired with coffee! One thing you won’t find on his plate is beef liver.

Barry has always had a heart for helping others. He’s volunteered at the local hospital and Jay C’s, and he even served as a volunteer fireman at a chemical plant. An extrovert by nature, Barry loves chatting with people wherever he goes.

He is most proud of his daughter, Heather, who was born in 1984, and his five wonderful grandchildren. Barry graduated from high school and has enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests over the years, including camping, fishing, and swimming. He also loves watching sports—especially cheering for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Barry spent most of his life in North Carolina and hopes to travel back there someday. His comfort foods usually involve anything chocolate. A few of his fondest memories include owning two successful businesses.

When Barry feels down, he finds peace in reading, watching TV, drinking coffee, praying, or relaxing in a quiet space. His favorite holiday memory is celebrating Christmas with his family—making memories that last a lifetime.

Why Wednesday: Jennifer Burton
What inspires me most about working in skilled nursing is seeing our patients’ quality of life improve over time. Knowing that some residents don’t always have family around, I find it deeply rewarding to encourage them and make them feel seen and heard each day. Watching a patient work hard to meet their goals and eventually return home is truly inspiring.
Maintaining open communication with residents helps me build trust and ensure they feel secure in the care and home they live in. I also appreciate the team I work with—we support each other in our roles, which leads to better outcomes for the residents.
The facility’s mission truly resonates with my personal values—reminding me each day to treat others with respect, integrity, and kindness.
Learning the Director of Medical Records position has been a very eye-opening experience. Having been a nurse for many years, gaining insight into the communication between providers and healthcare workers has helped me build stronger workplace relationships. Working here at Grand Plains and stepping into the Medical Records role has also given me a newfound respect for office employees and all the detailed paperwork they handle.
Looking ahead, my goal is to earn my RN and continue caring for others with greater knowledge and education. What keeps me motivated to continue in skilled nursing is the endless potential for growth and the many opportunities Americare has to offer.
