The Mile in Her Heart
Madge Spencer has been a resident at The Landings of Prescott Valley since the summer of 2022, but her story stretched far beyond those walls. Tomorrow, she turns 101 years old—a number that seemed less like an age and more like a medal earned through grit, humor, and a stubborn refusal to slow down.
She credits the secret to reaching such a milestone to her doctor that refused to give her a handicap sticker. He told her, “No, Madge. You’re going to walk a mile a day.”
At first, she thought he was joking. But she did it— mile after mile. As the years passed, he would gently shorten the distance, but never the expectation. When she turned 90, she asked him with a smirk, “How far should I walk now?”
He chuckled and replied, “Ninety-year-olds don’t walk.”
Madge laughed at that for years. She didn’t stop moving—she simply carried her mile inside her, in the way she greeted neighbors, in the sparkle of her eyes, in the way she leaned forward when listening to someone’s story as if it were the most important thing in the world.
At The Landings, she became more than a resident. She is a living reminder that life is not measured in the miles we walk, but in the joy we share. Staff and visitors alike found themselves drawn to her warmth. She remembered names, asked after grandchildren, and always had a quip ready to lighten the heaviest day.
On the eve of her 101st birthday, the community bustled with preparations—flowers, cake, and a banner that read “101 Years Young.” She thought of the miles she had walked, the laughter she had shared, and the people she had loved.
When asked the secret to her long life, she smiled and said, “Keep moving—whether it’s your feet, your mind, or your heart. Just keep moving.”
