Mingus Mountain Youth Treatment Center

Mingus Mountain Youth Treatment Center Mingus Mountain YTC is a Behavioral Health Inpatient Facility (BHIF) for adolescent females

Mingus Mountain Youth Treatment Center is a residential treatment center for emotionally and behaviorally at-risk adolescent girls that helps them achieve a positive, healthy future. Our program combines a trauma-informed organizational framework, caring staff, careful medical treatment, individualized psychotherapy and education, and numerous activities, including our unique equestrian program. Because many of the students who come to us have experienced significant trauma, our treatment team is specially trained to address these issues within a safe, structured, and nurturing environment. An emphasis on family therapy fosters successful reunification with families.

We approach our students with compassion, empathy and a trauma informed perspective. We separate the behavior from the student and know that academics provide much more than basic education. We teach them how to communicate, how to ask for help, how to problem-solve.

Most of our student have had to grow up much faster than their brains have been able to process. We work with them on the power of "yet!" to help create an open, rather than fixed mindset. "I may not be able to achieve this YET," is a much more powerful place to stand than "I will never get this." Our students learn how to re-frame their stories and the stories they tell themselves as they work on education, recovery, self-esteem and emotional regulation all within a safe and therapeutic environment. 🧡

If your loved one is struggling with trauma, substance use/abuse, behavioral challenges, trauma & addiction related to trafficking, then Mingus Mountain Youth Treatment Center may be a good fit.

Serving Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and more.

Horses 🏇 are naturally attuned to breath, body language, and energy—which makes Equine Therapy powerful for mood and behavioral challenges. At Mingus Mountain, girls learn mindfulness, impulse control, and grounding skills while grooming, leading, and riding, guided by our PATH-certified Equine Director, Mickey Kissell.

What skill—calm breathing, ✨ confidence, or patience—would you most want to build with a horse?

As a Sanctuary Certified Program and Joint Commission–accredited facility, Mingus Mountain weaves fidelity, transparency, and safety into every Equine session. From groundwork to mounted activities, girls practice new coping skills in real time—then apply them in school, groups, and family work. 🧡Learn more about EquineTherapy at Mingus Mountain Youth Treatment Center here: Equine Therapy at Mingus Mountain Youth Treatment Center https://na2.hubs.ly/H04k6cK0

Mingus Mountain Youth Treatment Center's Empowerment Over Exploitation program utilizes Written & Narrative Therapy as a trauma-informed treatment element. Creative Arts and Therapeutic Writing can be powerful tools for our Survivors as they reframe and take ownership of their stories and reclaim their identity.

This Human Trafficking Awareness Month we continue to shine a spotlight on the statistics from the Attorney General's Office.

Some additional statistics:
-Per data from the Arizona Attorney General’s Office:
-Law enforcement has seen girls as young as 9 sold for s*x in Arizona.
-90% of children trafficked in the United States are U.S. citizens.
-50% of trafficking victims are under the age of 16.
-75% of underage s*x trafficking victims said they had been advertised or sold online.
-1 in 7 youth online have received a s*xual solicitation or were approached over the internet.

If you are in the United States and believe someone may be a victim of human trafficking, call the 24-hour National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or report an emergency to law enforcement by calling 911. Trafficking victims, whether or not U.S. citizens, are eligible for services and immigration assistance.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and Mingus Mountain Youth Treatment Center is proud to take a moment to name why this month matters in the context of the work we do everyday here.

Through our Empowerment over Exploitation (EOE) programming, we work directly with youth who are at high risk for trafficking and with those who have experienced exploitation, focusing on prevention, education, and long-term safety.

We are honored and proud to serve these young women and their families.

Mingus Mountain Academy

Mingus Mountain Academy is a Joint Commission (JCAHO) accredited residential treatment center for emotionally and behaviorally at-risk adolescent girls. Founded in 1985, the Academy is located on a 120-acre campus surrounded by National Forest, 25 minutes from the town of Prescott Valley, Arizona. Our ability to motivate the girls toward a positive, healthy future is a major factor in our success. To this end, our program combines a positive peer culture, caring staff, careful medical treatment, individualized psychotherapy and education, and numerous activities including our unique equestrian program. The peer culture uses the power of positive peer influence to address behavioral problems. Because many of the students who come to us have experienced significant trauma, our treatment team is specially trained to address these issues within our safe, structured, and nurturing environment. An emphasis on family therapy fosters successful reunification with families. Two therapeutic group homes give students the opportunity to re-enter society, living in nearby communities and getting part-time jobs if they wish, while continuing their treatment and education on campus.
