Our bodies are complex creations and work in wonderful and mysterious ways. Our bodies are equipped with a line of defense called the immune system to protect us from pathogens of all kinds. Our immune system is a complex system of different organs (appendix & spleen are two), cells (white blood cells), and lymph nodes that work to keep us free from disease and infection. But sometimes, we don't take care of our resources and end up with a weakened immune system that's ineffective when we need it most.
One sick person in a room or truckload of sugared-up (sugar lowers the immune system!) kids can bring down the house for a few days as the germs spread like wildfire through defenses that may already be weakened by stress, lack of exercise, poor eating habits, not enough sleep, less fresh air and excess weight. So, what can we do to support our immune system naturally with herbs?
Start using immune-supporting herbs early! Adding herbal immune supporters to your daily routine at summer's end may help you get a jump on those viral bugs. A few favorites are:
Echinacea: Has antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties.
Elderberry: It supports respiratory health, has antibacterial and antiviral properties, and is rich in antioxidants.
Garlic: stimulates the immune system as well as is a natural antibiotic.
Ginger: This can help increase circulation, soothe nausea, dispel fevers, and get rid of chills.
Astragalus: Is an adaptogenic herb. It has antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.
What immune-supporting herbs do you keep on hand?
