The start of spring and summer back all of the different sports and, with that, the sports drinks. These drinks may be rehydrating your body and balancing out electrolytes, but they are a toxic chemical cocktail that does more harm than good to the body.

Below, you'll see a few harmful ingredients and how they harm the body.
How do you stay hydrated?

Our bodies are complex creations and work in wonderful and mysterious ways. Our bodies are equipped with a line of defense called the immune system to protect us from pathogens of all kinds. Our immune system is a complex system of different organs (appendix & spleen are two), cells (white blood cells), and lymph nodes that work to keep us free from disease and infection. But sometimes, we don't take care of our resources and end up with a weakened immune system that's ineffective when we need it most.

One sick person in a room or truckload of sugared-up (sugar lowers the immune system!) kids can bring down the house for a few days as the germs spread like wildfire through defenses that may already be weakened by stress, lack of exercise, poor eating habits, not enough sleep, less fresh air and excess weight. So, what can we do to support our immune system naturally with herbs?

Start using immune-supporting herbs early! Adding herbal immune supporters to your daily routine at summer's end may help you get a jump on those viral bugs. A few favorites are:

Echinacea: Has antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties.
Elderberry: It supports respiratory health, has antibacterial and antiviral properties, and is rich in antioxidants.
Garlic: stimulates the immune system as well as is a natural antibiotic.
Ginger: This can help increase circulation, soothe nausea, dispel fevers, and get rid of chills.
Astragalus: Is an adaptogenic herb. It has antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

What immune-supporting herbs do you keep on hand?

It's no secret most people get sicker during the winter months. We are out and about more trying to get our holiday shopping in. Most of us are vitamin D deficient(even more so in winter months), and we are around people we don't typically see much. While being sick is no fun for anyone, it is even less so for the little ones.

Here are six simple ways to protect the littlest ones of your bunch this winter:

1. Babywear: Babywearing will keep your baby close to you and most likely keep people's hands off the baby. People love babies and touch babies' hands which eventually end up in the baby's mouth. Any germs that person had are now in your baby's mouth.

2. Sanitizing: Requesting all people wash and thoroughly dry their hands before handling a child will help to eliminate many of the possible germs a person can pass on. Studies show that thoroughly drying hands is an integral part of hand washing.

3. Breastfeed: For young babies, frequent kisses on their hands and face and breastfeeding will help your body know which antibodies to make to help them fight any possible illness they have come into contact with.

4. Probiotics: More and more research shows that our gut health and our immune system are linked. About 80% of our immune system relies on our gut health. So if you are taking care of your child's gut health, their overall health should follow.

5. Chiropractic care: The nervous and immune systems work very closely together to keep our bodies healthy. Regular chiropractic care has been shown to boost the coordination between these two systems.

6. Rest: Getting adequate sleep is vital for our baby's health. Sleep gives the body the time to release the best infection-fighting antibodies. Sleep is also crucial when fighting any illness.

At some point in our lives, we have all struggled with sore muscles. Whether from being deficient in minerals or overworking ourselves, everyone has felt that tenseness that accompanies sore muscles. Many people turn to over-the-counter or prescription medications when needing relief from muscular pain. But are these safe?

The problem with typical prescriptions or over-the-counter muscle relaxers, such as NSAIDs, is that they do not heal the problem. Instead, they work by shutting off communication between your nervous system and brain so you don't feel pain. This "shut off" isn't specific to just the area of concern. The entire body is affected in ways that are not purposeful or desirable. Furthermore, muscle relaxers also don't actually work on your muscular system, despite their name alluding to this. They work on your nervous system.

Instead of turning to synthetic medications that can do more harm than good, try one of these eight natural muscle relaxers seen in the graphic.

These are our top 6 herbs to help fight the flu. Each has been shown in studies to fight the flu directly, or to have a general anti-viral or lung-supporting effect.

Did you know that Candida is a common fungus found on and in the body? It aids in digestion and nutrient absorption. It is generally harmless, but in many, an overgrowth of Candida occurs.

Also known as yeast, Candida is typically found in and on the body and is not problematic in average amounts. The healthy bacteria in your body keep Candida levels under control. But if healthy bacteria levels are disrupted or the immune system is compromised, Candida can begin to grow uncontrollably.

Some factors that can lead to candida overgrowth are:
-Antibiotics
-High-stress levels
-Sugar and refined carbs
-High alcohol intake
-Weakened immune system
-Oral contraceptives
-Diabetes

Some signs of candida overgrowth are:
-Joint pain
-Fatigue
-Sinus infections
-Oral thrush
-Reoccurring ge***al or urinary tract infections
Digestive issues
Skin and nail fungal infections

Some foods you can use to fight Candida are:
-Kombucha
-Garlic
-Probiotics
-Coconut oil
-Curcumin
-Aloe vera
-Pomegranate

Curcumin, also known as turmeric, a relative of ginger, has compounds called curcuminoids (curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric), has been shown to completely inhibit the growth of Candida albicans and many other fungal strains.

It's true! So many parents fear fevers, but really shouldn’t! The fever helps the body do its job and fight off whatever is ailing them.

When you take fever reducers, you inhibit the body’s natural process of detoxifying and healing.

It's important to note, that if you have a young infant that gets a fever you should call your pediatrician or visit the emergency room. Older children and adults that have a fever should let it run its course to help burn off the toxins. It’s important to rest, stay hydrated, and stay bundled up at night. Baths with Epsom salt can help to sweat out a fever and many parents use the wet sock treatment with children at night to lower a high fever.
