If your loved one has PTSD, you might be wondering, “how can I help?”

Family members and loved ones of someone with PTSD can offer unique support, and it doesn’t have to be complicated. Actions like taking a walk or going to a doctor’s visit with your loved one can help reassure them that they’re not alone.

🌿 May Is Mental Health Awareness Month

Every May, communities across the country come together to shine a light on something that affects all of us — mental health.

At County Behavioral Medicine, we believe that mental health is health, and this month is an important reminder that:

- Mental health challenges are common
- Support is available
- Healing is possible
- No one should have to struggle alone

This month encourages all of us to pause, check in with ourselves, and reach out to those who may be carrying more than they show. Whether it’s anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, or simply feeling overwhelmed, your experiences are real — and they matter.

How you can participate this month:
- Start a conversation about mental health
- Practice small daily acts of self‑care
- Learn the signs of stress, burnout, and emotional fatigue
- Encourage someone to seek support
- Reach out if you need help — it’s a sign of strength

Our team is here for Aroostook County with compassionate, evidence‑based care for individuals, couples, and families. If you or someone you love is struggling, this month is a powerful time to take the first step.

You deserve support. You deserve understanding. You deserve to feel well.
💚

Hi friends — you may have noticed our name, County Behavioral Medicine, and wondered why a clinic that doesn’t prescribe medications uses the word medicine. The term behavioral medicine describes an evidence‑based, whole‑person approach that treats the interaction of behavior, emotions, and biology. We provide therapy, behavioral interventions, and care coordination; when medication is appropriate, we partner with prescribers to ensure safe, coordinated care. If you’re curious about what we do or whether our services fit your needs, send us a message or call the office — we’re happy to explain.

🌬️ Panic Disorder: When the Body Hits “Emergency Mode” for No Clear Reason
At **County Behavioral Medicine**, we often hear people say, “It came out of nowhere.” That’s the reality of Panic Disorder — the body’s alarm system suddenly switches into full emergency mode even when nothing dangerous is happening.

A panic attack can bring:
- A racing heart
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness
- Shaking or dizziness
- A wave of fear that feels overwhelming

It’s like a smoke alarm going off from burnt toast instead of a fire.

The good news is that Panic Disorder is **highly treatable**. With the right tools and support, people can calm the body’s alarm system, reduce attacks, and regain confidence in daily life.

If panic is affecting you or someone you love, **County Behavioral Medicine** is here to help you understand what’s happening and find a path toward relief and stability.

You’re not alone — and you’re not “overreacting.” Your body is asking for support, and support is available.

🌧️ Depression and Mood: What It Really Looks Like

A Major Depressive Episode doesn’t just make someone “feel sad.” It changes a person’s **mood** in ways that can affect every part of daily life.

People may notice:

- A heavy, low, or flat mood
- Feeling numb or disconnected
- Irritability or getting overwhelmed easily
- Losing interest in things they used to enjoy
- Feeling hopeless or discouraged

These mood changes are **real medical symptoms**, not personal failures or character flaws.

At County Behavioral Medicine, we want our community to know:
✨ A depressed mood can make even simple tasks feel harder.
✨ You’re not alone if you’re struggling.
✨ Support and treatment can help you feel like yourself again.

We’re here for Aroostook County. 💛

Understanding Depression & the Power of Talk Therapy 💙

Major Depressive Disorder (often called depression) is more common than many people realize. In the United States, about **1 in 12 adults** experiences depression in a given year. That means many of our friends, family members, coworkers—and maybe even ourselves—are affected.

Depression isn’t a personal weakness or something someone can “just snap out of.” It’s a real medical condition that can impact mood, sleep, energy, focus, and how someone feels about life and relationships.

One of the most effective treatments for depression is **talk therapy**. Therapy offers a safe, supportive space to:
- Talk openly about thoughts and feelings
- Learn coping skills for stress and low mood
- Better understand patterns that may keep depression going
- Build tools for healing and long-term wellness

At **County Behavioral Medicine**, we believe no one should face depression alone. Help is available, and recovery is possible. Reaching out can be a powerful first step toward feeling better.

If you or someone you care about is struggling, we’re here to help. 💙

Depression isn’t always about feeling sad.
One of the most challenging symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder is **anhedonia**—the loss of interest or pleasure in things that once mattered.

People often describe it as:
• “I should enjoy this, but I don’t feel anything.”
• “Even good moments feel flat.”
• “I’m not sad… just numb.”

Anhedonia can feel isolating and confusing, especially when it’s hard to explain to others. But this symptom is **treatable**, and support can make a meaningful difference.

If this resonates with you or someone you love, a conversation with a professional may be a helpful first step.
💙 **County Behavioral Medicine** offers compassionate consultations to help you understand what you’re experiencing and explore options for support.

You don’t have to navigate this alone.
