This is not a replacement for speech therapy, and if you have concerns about your child’s speech I recommend evaluation and treatment by a speech language pathologist.

At Home Articulation would be ideal for kids who are able to say their sounds when they are thinking about it, but are not yet remembering to say those sounds all the time.

Save this video, give it a try, and then use code “sayahspeech” to get a 15% discount off of your first payment! Remember that annual payment is already offered at a discount and when stacked with my code you get the best possible deal for At Home Articulation!

Day 5 - Reading & Conversation

One activity I neglected to mention in this video is to set a timer for 5 minutes and just encourage your child to use their best sounds while talking about whatever they want!

It’s okay (and recommended) to continue practicing at the word and sentence levels, generalization doesn’t come easily - we’re requiring the brain after all! Continue with short daily practices to help generalization take place!

To clarify, I do not think it’s hilarious when she gets hurt. It’s just so cute when she says patella 😂

Day 4 - phrases and sentences!
Keep practicing the same words, but now you can start incorporating them into some phrases/sentences.

You can use a carrier phrase like “I see__” or “I like __”or you can come up with your own fun sentences!
I didn’t mention it in the video, but continue using some sort of activity as reinforcement.

Straight drill practice is pretty boring, so be sure to make speech practice something that is not pure drudgery!

Day 3 - Word Level - we cover a lot of information here, please let me know if I need to break this down further!

1. Start by getting a word list (or pictures) from Google by typing “. sound initial
words” | recommend using 10-20 words to practice.
2. Set a timer for 5 minutes, pick an activity as a motivator, and practice your words as many times as you can in those five minutes (say a word 5 times then they get a turn playing a game).
3. Repeat the practice of their sound in the initial position of words for 3 days.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 with word lists targeting their sound in the final position of words, and medial position of words.
5. When they can consistently say their sound in all word positions at the word level they are ready to move on to the next step.

Step number two: work on getting their sound SUPER solid in isolation (when saying the sound on its own, not in words).

In order to do this I like to use:
- mirrors and my own mouth as a model
- hand gestures for each sound
- a new name for the sound we are working on

Every sound is going to require different cues
- so if you need help coming up with cues for the sound you want to target let me know in the comments!

Step number one is knowing what sounds to work on! Let me know in the comments what sounds you want to work on with your child!

When we model - rather than asking questions - it takes pressure off of our little people, keeps them engaged, and teaches them the words they need to learn!

Speech sound milestones!

Are you surprised by any of these? When this study came out I was surprised to see that most kids say the R sound at 5!

PS I can help with that 😘

PS - if your baby has difficulty holding in a round shaped pacifier (when actively sucking) it’s a sign or oral-motor disfunction. I would be very curious about tension, ties, or other possiblilities. On that note, when they are not actively sucking, the pacifier SHOULD fall out of their mouth.

Some babies never take a binky and that’s no problem!
