We typically expect the /k/ sound be present at age 3. It can be a stubborn one to correct, but I have found this cue to be helpful for many children!

Maybe I learned this in my phonetics course, but let’s be real, I haven’t spent much time thinking about phonetics since then 😅

This is why sometimes you’ll see young writers use the incorrect letter when spelling these words - they are spelling phonetically!

A quick peek at how I teach kids to say the /m/ sound in speech therapy!

M is a very visual sound, utilize a mirror, lots of modeling, and of course lots of opportunities to practice through play!

In American English the M sound is one of the earliest to develop! If a child is having difficulty with this sound at age 3, I would recommend talking to a speech language pathologist!

The long and short of it is that I’d recommend taking her to a speech language pathologist. I do share tips here for teaching kids how to say different sounds, but if others are having a very hard time understanding her she’d likely benefit from a more complex approach.

Here’s one easy strategy to implement that supports your toddlers language development! Translating what your toddler says/signs/gestures - just with more mature vocabulary supports their continued language development. It’s also super easy implement!

This is definitely a cute error - but like many others it’s only cute for so long. I’d generally want to address this by age 5-6!

How to teach a child to say yellow instead of Lello - it’s easier than you’d realize!

I was very happy to get a response from one of my reps who has a daughter with hearing loss and knows how important speech therapy is, and that he would fight these cuts! More voices need be heard though!
For the record I live in Idaho, but do not work in Idaho.

Typically we expect kids to be able to say the
CH sound by age 4, and if not, this is one strategy that I have found that works to help them!

Wondering how to help kids say the CH sound? Try these ideas!

Typically we expect kids to be able to say th
CH sound by 4 years old. If they are having difficulty, direct instruction in speech therapy, or consisten home practice can help!

Let me know what sounds you need help with!

Please also know that while I do use some negative feedback, I’m overwhelmingly using positive phrases in speech therapy.

Sometimes giving accurate and specific feedback is most effectively achieved through negative feedback.
Of course this will look different with every student and age group, but overwhelmingly students can handle an occasional “that’s not quite right.” Thoughts? Do you use negative feedback in speech therapy?

Typically we expect kids to say the L sound by the age of 4, and if they need a little support getting there? This is what speech therapy might look like! This is how I teach kids to say the L sound!

It’s important for them to understand why it’s important to say the correct sound (because sounds change word meanings), which is why I use minimal pair cards! I’d also typically use a mirror to help them watch lip rounding.

Now that you now how to say the L sound, what sounds would you like help with next?
