October is a month of action, and on October 5th, we’re celebrating a day dedicated to one of the most powerful actions of all: kindness.
It’s National Do Something Nice Day, a perfect reminder that small gestures can create a huge impact. We believe in a strong community, and kindness is at the heart of it.

Here are some ways you can celebrate:

Pay it forward: Buy a coffee for the person behind you, or hold the door for someone.

Spread positivity: Give a sincere compliment to a friend or a fellow gym-goer.

Be kind to yourself: Take a moment to appreciate your body for all it does, and engage in some positive self-talk.

Inspire others: Share your act of kindness and encourage your friends to do the same!

Let’s start a ripple effect of goodwill. How will you do something nice today?

As the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, it can be tough to stay motivated with your fitness routine. But cooler weather is no match for your goals!

It is important to stay active all year long. To help you do that, here are some of our favorite tips for keeping your energy and motivation high this season:

Maximize daylight: Try to exercise when there’s still natural light — it can boost your mood, energy, and vitamin D.

Morning movement: Shorter days can make evening workouts harder to stick to. Aim for morning sessions to stay consistent.
The 5:30, 7, and 8 am classes are perfect for shorter fall days.

Dress smart: Start with moisture-wicking base layers, add a warming mid-layer, and finish with a wind- or water-resistant jacket.

Warm up longer: Cold muscles are more prone to injury, so add 5–10 minutes of dynamic stretching or brisk walking before you dive in.

Use the scenery: Fall hikes, trail runs, or park workouts add variety and make the season part of your fitness routine.

Mix it up: Try new indoor classes like our amazing strength classes, Pilates-yoga fusion, or our High Fit, Cardio Fuse, and Step

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we believe in prioritizing our health. Did you know that screenings like mammograms can help detect breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable? In fact, early detection has contributed to a significant drop in breast cancer death rates.

But that’s not all—living a healthy lifestyle is also a powerful tool in prevention. Maintaining a healthy weight, eating well, and staying physically active are all simple yet impactful ways to lower your risk.

Taking charge of your health is a team effort, and we’re here to help! Check out these free resources at nationalbreastcancer.org/bcam-resources for early detection, living with cancer, and survivorship.

Lunchbox Makeover Tips
Jeannine Groll, RDN, CP

1. Think in Color.
Aim for a rainbow of fruits and veggies to boost nutrients and keep it fun.

2. Swap the White.
Use whole grain wraps, breads, or crackers instead of white bread.

3. Protein Power.
Add lean proteins like turkey, hard-boiled eggs, cheese sticks, protein balls or hummus for lasting energy.

4. Ditch the Juice Box.
Replace with water, milk, or a fruit-infused water bottle.

5. DIY Snack Packs
. Make your own trail mix or veggie cups—skip the pre-packaged stuff.

6. Sneak in Veggies.
Add spinach to wraps, cucumbers to sandwiches, or carrots with dip.

7. Add a Surprise Note.
A positive message or joke can brighten their day and encourage good choices.

8. Balance is Key.
Include a carb (whole wheat bread), protein (ham and cheese), healthy fat (olive oil mayo), and fiber-rich produce (lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers) in each lunch.

9. Skip Sugary Treats.
Replace cookies with fruit leather, applesauce (unsweetened), or snack sized popcorn.

10. Get Kids Involved.
Let them choose healthy options—they’re more likely to eat what they helped pack!

Employee Spotlight: Stacy Nielson
Meet Stacy Nielson, one of our incredible yoga instructors! Stacy has been a certified yoga instructor for seven years and holds a 200-hour yoga certification and a Silver Sneaker certification.

Stacy loves teaching yoga because of its versatility—from gentle and relaxing flows to advanced poses, she enjoys teaching it all. We are so grateful to have her as an instructor and she loves teaching at GFF because she says our members are so friendly and non-judgmental.

When she’s not teaching, Stacy enjoys puzzles, diamond dots, and crafting with her two daughters, ages 17 and 18. She also loves to be outdoors, especially hiking and swimming at Bloomington Lake with her family.

Thank you, Stacy, for your dedication as a member and instructor for so many years! We are so lucky to have you as part of the Groll Family Fitness team.
