Oliver the gentle giant Irish Wolfhound came in with his new brother Blue for an annual exam! 🩺🐾

Fun fact: Irish Wolfhounds are the tallest standard dog breed in the world! They can reach heights of over 7 feet tall when standing on their hind legs! Thankfully, their hearts are just as big as they are.💙

Deep-chested dog breeds, like Irish Wolfhounds, are at increased risk for gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV, or “bloat”), a life-threatening condition where the stomach rapidly fills with gas and can twist.

Early warning signs of GDV can include restlessness, unproductive retching, a distended or tight abdomen, excessive drooling, and sudden weakness or collapse. GDV is always an emergency.
A surgery called a gastropexy ("stomach tack") can help reduce the risk of stomach twisting.

Ticks can transmit more than one disease.

The 2026 parasite forecast maps from the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) show expanding tick-borne disease risk across many regions, including Minnesota.

Lyme, Anaplasma, and Ehrlichia are tick-borne diseases that can all cause:
🚩 Fever
🚩 Lethargy
🚩 Decreased appetite
🚩 Joint pain or stiffness

⚠️ Lyme disease: often affect joints and may damage kidney and cause Lyme nephritis
⚠️ Anaplasma: can cause low platelets and lead to bruising or bleeding
⚠️ Ehrlichia: can become a chronic infection that affects white blood cells and platelets

Protect your pets with:
✅ Year-round parasite prevention
✅ Daily tick checks after being outdoors
✅ Routine testing

📍Think heartworms aren't a threat in our area? The new 2025 maps show otherwise. Over 1 million pets are infected with heartworms!

The American Heartworm Society recently published the 2025 heartworm incidence map. Some mosquitoes survive the winter in "micro-climates" like crawl spaces, heated garages, and hollow logs, or by leaving behind hardy eggs that wait for the first spring thaw to hatch. All it takes is one resilient mosquito and one "warm spell" for an unprotected pet to become infected. Year-round medications to protect your pet is much safer (and cheaper) than heartworm treatment.

Is your pet protected? 🛡️

We have multiple options available both in-clinic and through our online pharmacy. Contact us today to find out how you can protect your pet and ensure they stay healthy year-round! 🐾
