Parents and patients: please read!

CPAP failure isn’t a patient problem.
It’s a model problem.

When 30 to 50 percent of people cannot tolerate CPAP, it tells us we are managing airflow at night without addressing why the airway collapses in the first place.

Poor tongue posture, orofacial muscle dysfunction, nasal resistance, tonsils, adenoids, craniofacial restriction and other physical obstructions matter. They shape the airway 24 hours a day, not just during sleep.

Treating pressure without correcting structure and function guarantees poor adherence.

Address causes first.
Support with devices second.

I also see many similarities amongst parents and children.

I also see many similarities amongst parents and children.

Airway problems rarely happen in isolation.
They cluster in families through shared genetics, facial growth patterns, and environmental factors.

Which means one diagnosis should prompt a wider conversation.
Early screening does not create problems
it prevents years of missed ones.

Are you looking for a easy way to help promote proper tongue rest posture? I really like these MYOSPOTS to help remind patients of where their tongue should rest in the roof of the mouth.

Children don’t grow out of airway obstructions — they grow around them.

Every blocked nose, every night of snoring, every restless sleep shapes how a child’s face develops… and how their brain functions.

What looks like “just snoring” today can mean lifelong changes in facial growth, behaviour, and learning potential.

👉 Early intervention changes everything.

It’s Not About How Long They Sleep… It’s About How Well They Breathe

Parents often track how many hours their children sleep.
But the real question is —
👉 How well are they breathing while they sleep?

Even 10 hours means little if their airway is struggling.
Snoring, open-mouth breathing, tossing, or sweating at night are all red flags.

🧠 Airway problems destroy sleep quality, block deep restorative phases, and silently affect learning, focus, and behaviour.

Because a child who breathes poorly… sleeps poorly.
And a child who sleeps poorly… struggles in ways that no bedtime routine can fix.

Think nighttime teeth grinding is “just a phase”? Think again.

Grinding isn’t normal.
It’s not just stress. It’s not just teething.
In children, it’s often a red flag. 🚩

👉 Grinding at night is usually the body’s way of trying to open a blocked airway.

Here’s what might be happening:
• The tongue falls back and blocks the airway 💤
• The brain senses low oxygen 😵‍💫
• The jaw clenches and grinds to move the tongue or airway open 🦷
• Repeat. All. Night. Long.

This is not harmless. It disturbs deep sleep and can lead to:
⚠️ Daytime fatigue
⚠️ ADHD-like behavior
⚠️ Facial growth changes
⚠️ Tooth wear and jaw problems

If your child is grinding their teeth at night, it’s time to look at their breathing.

💡 Nighttime grinding is often the sound of a child struggling to breathe.

It's important to incorporate nasal hygiene rinses into your family's routine even when they aren't necessarily stuffy! 🤧🤧

Super proud of my patient! She's been dedicated to her therapy and the progress speaks for itself!

For those unaware, our tongues should make contact comfortably in the roof of our mouths in our to stay out of our airways. This habit is achieved with sufficient suction of our tongues in our palate. Her first visit, she was unable to demonstrate a proper lingual palatal suction.
She's far from alone- I screen ALL of my dental patients. With work and dedication, the muscle memory is improving- our brains are plastic!

This patient also presented with tongue thrusting behaviors when she ate and at rest. You can see now where she's parking her tongue back away from her upper front teeth into a more neutral position in hopes to help reduce the malocclusion.
