Think nighttime teeth grinding is “just a phase”? Think again.

Grinding isn’t normal.
It’s not just stress. It’s not just teething.
In children, it’s often a red flag. 🚩

👉 Grinding at night is usually the body’s way of trying to open a blocked airway.

Here’s what might be happening:
• The tongue falls back and blocks the airway 💤
• The brain senses low oxygen 😵‍💫
• The jaw clenches and grinds to move the tongue or airway open 🦷
• Repeat. All. Night. Long.

This is not harmless. It disturbs deep sleep and can lead to:
⚠️ Daytime fatigue
⚠️ ADHD-like behavior
⚠️ Facial growth changes
⚠️ Tooth wear and jaw problems

If your child is grinding their teeth at night, it’s time to look at their breathing.

💡 Nighttime grinding is often the sound of a child struggling to breathe.

Super proud of my patient! She's been dedicated to her therapy and the progress speaks for itself!

For those unaware, our tongues should make contact comfortably in the roof of our mouths in our to stay out of our airways. This habit is achieved with sufficient suction of our tongues in our palate. Her first visit, she was unable to demonstrate a proper lingual palatal suction.
She's far from alone- I screen ALL of my dental patients. With work and dedication, the muscle memory is improving- our brains are plastic!

This patient also presented with tongue thrusting behaviors when she ate and at rest. You can see now where she's parking her tongue back away from her upper front teeth into a more neutral position in hopes to help reduce the malocclusion.

All too often, the parents who are bringing their kiddos in for evaluations have very similar symptoms.

I try not to get angry, frustrated, or annoyed. I guess I am really just confused.

Why are parents being told that their kid who is snoring, waking up tired, and has tonsils like this being told they will outgrow it? Why are they being recommended surgery but then put on a wait list that is 1-2 years long?

We know the importance of breathing. We know the importance of early intervention. We know the lifelong consequences of delayed treatment. But the lack of proactive care is equivalent to not knowing.

I am so grateful to the parents of children that trust me to help their child. I am so grateful to the parents that seek out further advice when they have been told it’s no big deal to let theme snore or mouth breathe.

This really is not rocket science- I can explain this to a kid of school and they get it.
If new information comes along that shows I am wrong, I will change. We have old information that I am relying on that is supported by contemporary findings and yet there is no change.

Am I just deluded? Have I gone deep down some rabbit hole and lost perspective? Or am I really that different to so many but doing the right thing? All I know is these kids lives are changing for the better using my skills and knowledge. Skills that keep being refined. Knowledge that keeps being accumulated.

I am unashamedly an upper airway breathing specialist. And I will keep fixing kids like this when other won’t. And I will fix them as fast as I can.

I should not have parents crying in my office with tears of relief and saying that they are just so relieved that someone listened to them. But every week I am at work it happens. Every week.

To those parents seeking help all I can say is I’m here for you and your child.

😛👅Tongue Tie Thursday!👅😛

Juliana did an amazing job on Monday for her functional frenuloplasty procedure. For those curious, this isn't just going in and cutting the naturally occurring ties in our mouth. It's much deeper than that, literally! With the care of Gary Adams, DDS, Beth Bright, RDH/OMT and the entire team at Maryland Holistic Dentist, Juliana displayed almost immediate results.

She had 5 releases performed- 2 upper buccal (cheek), upper (very important-often overlooked) and lower lip, and tongue releases. Dr. Adams showed me how her bands of fascia were literally connected to the muscles and he was able to pluck and release those strands. Picture a rubber band ball and if you were to cut away to release the tension.

Since this connective tissue/fascia is connected to our toes, that evening I noticed that she was no longer curling her toes involuntarily when at rest. We've had 2 mommy/daughter sleepovers so far-she was motionless nearly the entire night with slow, quiet, consistent breathing. Despite her discomfort on Tuesday (managed with liquid advil/tylenol) she was in happier spirits and her behavior/mood has been more relaxed.

We are still working on post op oromyofunctional exercises as her healing improves, but to see such profound results so far is very inspiring.
