I had a cesarean…..
If you’ve been following me along for a while now you’d know that I am a birth doula. As a birth doula I support and advocate for women to have the birth of their dreams.
•
My birth of my dreams was to have an unmediated birth at a Birth Center with a tub. I didn’t get that…. And I AM STILL SO HAPPY.
•
As a doula I am 100% aware of how rapidly birth can change, and with my clients I work hard for them to have a plan A, plan B, and plan C. Having plans is not about trying to control your birth outcome, but rather to educate yourself about all your options. No one wants to be in the throws of an emergency having to learn new terminology or options. So planning ahead of time is important. And I am glad we took this approach.

Due to some concerns the week leading up to me going into labor. We opted to transfer to Labor and Delivery and enact our “Plan B” plan. I went into labor the night of October 29 and labored naturally until the following morning when I requested an epidural to help me further relax and dilate.
•
I labored for over 24 hours with the epidural before I started to push. I pushed in all positions possible to me for 4 hours, but it became clear that something we could not see was happening. It was then that we enacted “Plan C”.
•
My Cesarean was never considered an emergency since we had plenty of time to make decisions and both Gabriel and I were doing so well. It was clear however, that if I continued as I was, an emergency could very well arise.
•
Ultimately we discovered that Gabriel was in a bad position and caught on my tailbone in my pelvis, which ultimately caused some swelling to his head.
•
Gabriel was born 8lbs 13oz (according to the hospital, but that’s still contested), 21 inches long at 1:50 in the afternoon on a beautiful sunny day. I have to admit the labor was HARD and very emotionally draining, but I am so glad we made preparations and that we received so much support from friends and family. Especially my parents and In-Laws.
•
I would like to thank Anne Arundel Medical Center for their amazing Labor and Delivery, and Postpartum nurses. Dr. Brathwaite for preforming a relaxing and empowering cesarean. The Luminis Midwifery team for taking such good care of us the entirety of our pregnancy. And lastly Shannon Crush of Birth as You Wish Birth Services for being my amazing Doula and keeping me calm and supported during the change.

We are home and recovering and appreciate everyone’s kind words of support and prayers. As you can imagine recovery from such an ordeal is very intense both emotionally and physically. I will be taking time for us.
