Your volunteer paramedics, serving our community in Calvert County and delivering professional, lifesaving emergency medical care, since 1990. Since its founding in 1989, Calvert Advanced Life Support has remained dedicated to providing advanced life support care to the residents and visitors of Calvert County. What began as a small group of committed volunteers operating out of a single room in t

he basement of the courthouse in Prince Frederick has grown into a respected countywide organization with a long tradition of service, professionalism, and community commitment. On July 1, 1989, the organization held its first official meeting under the guidance of Calvert County’s first Medical Director, Dr. Daniel Fricke. During that meeting, the organization elected its first officers and laid the foundation for what would become one of the region’s most respected volunteer paramedic services. On January 1, 1990, Calvert ALS was officially in service and answered its first emergency call using a used advanced life support chase vehicle purchased from the Charles County Mobile Intensive Care Unit program. Operating from modest quarters in the courthouse basement, members worked under challenging conditions with limited space and resources, yet remained committed to delivering the highest level of prehospital emergency medical care to the community. Over the years, Calvert ALS relocated several times as the organization expanded to meet the growing needs of the county. From shared space at Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department, to a long-standing home in the basement of a local medical office, and later a larger facility on Theater Drive, each move represented another step forward in the organization’s development and capabilities. As emergency medical services evolved within Calvert County, Calvert ALS expanded its operational footprint by placing advanced life support equipment throughout the county and increasing response capabilities in multiple communities. Today, the organization works alongside county career staff while proudly remaining a 100% volunteer agency — continuing a tradition of volunteer service that has defined the organization since its inception. In 2006, Calvert ALS moved into its current headquarters in Prince Frederick, providing significantly expanded space for operations, training, meetings, and housing of emergency response vehicles. The facility remains the organization’s home today and serves as a hub for volunteer paramedics dedicated to serving the community. Calvert ALS has built a strong reputation for advanced medical training, clinical excellence, and innovation in prehospital care. Members regularly train on the latest emergency medical techniques and utilize advanced equipment and treatment protocols typically found in larger metropolitan systems. The organization has embraced progressive lifesaving initiatives, including a whole blood program that has already helped improve outcomes and save multiple lives in critically injured patients. This commitment to modern medicine and continuous training ensures that the citizens of Calvert County always receive high-quality care when seconds matter most. For decades, Calvert ALS has provided advanced life support coverage throughout Calvert County’s unique geography, spanning more than 200 square miles bordered by the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River. Through dedication, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to public service, the organization continues to answer the call whenever the community needs it most. Today, Calvert ALS remains committed to its mission of providing high-quality emergency medical care while preserving the proud tradition of volunteer EMS throughout Calvert County. If you are interested in becoming a Paramedic or serving your community, we are always actively seeking new members. Send us a message here on facebook, send an email to info2@cavlertals.net, or give us a call at (410) 535-0411.

On April 18, 2026, Safety Officer Marc Richman suffered multiple cardiac arrests while responding to a structure fire in the line of duty. Thanks to the swift actions, skill and teamwork of fellow emergency responders, Marc received lifesaving care and was transported to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he underwent emergency cardiac surgery and began a successful recovery.

Thank you to the members of Calvert Advanced Life Support, the Calvert County Career EMS Division, Charles County Department of Emergency Services, Maryland State Police - Aviation Command, Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department, Solomons Volunteer Rescue Squad and Fire Department, St Leonard Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Company 7, Marc has been able to return to the field and continue serving the community he cares about.

Marc’s story is a powerful reminder of the risks firefighters and emergency responders face every day, and of the sacrifices made in service to their communities. Let’s take a moment to remember those who have been lost in the line of duty and stand in support of the entire fire service family.

On August 3, 2025, 8-year-old twins Ivar and Norah witnessed their mom having a seizure. Norah quickly told Ivar to call 911. While Norah stayed with her two younger siblings, Ivar ran out and got a neighbor to help them call 911. They were able to help their neighbor answer all of the questions the dispatcher had. When Paramedic Kreider and Paramedic Elliott arrived, they were met by Ivar, Norah, and their neighbor. They helped answer questions and entertain their younger siblings until their dad arrived home.

Paramedic Kreider nominated Ivar and Norah for the Maryland EMSC “Right Care When it Counts” award. This award recognizes children and youth in Maryland who have demonstrated the correct steps to take in an emergency. Ivar and Norah did just that.

This week is EMS Week. Today, Norah and Ivar were recognized for their efforts at the MIEMSS Region V Awards held at the Montgomery County Public Safety Headquarters. Paramedic Kreider and Paramedic Elliott were able to attend and congratulate the twins. Calvert ALS is so proud of these kids and their efforts to help those around them!

This EMS Week, we want to recognize and thank our more than 50 dedicated volunteer members of Calvert Advanced Life Support (CALS) who answer the call day and night to serve our neighbors.

For over three decades, our volunteers have remained dedicated to providing advanced life support care to our residents and visitors here in Calvert County. Whether responding to life-threatening emergencies, training countless hours to maintain advanced medical skills, or supporting one another behind the scenes, our members consistently represent professionalism, compassion, and service in our community.

Each call answered, every life touched, and every hour volunteered reflects their dedication to our community, while our members also balance careers, families, school, and personal responsibilities.

We are always thankful for our partner EMS departments throughout the county, our partner fire departments, CCSO, and our dispatchers, that make every day possible for our volunteers.

To all of our volunteer paramedics, EMTs, support personnel, and families who make these sacrifices possible: Thank you. Your service does not go unnoticed, we are grateful, and our community is stronger because of you.

Happy EMS Week to all EMS providers everywhere, and especially our Calvert volunteers!

On Sunday, April 26, Medics and EMTs from Calvert Advanced Life Support (CALS) participated in the Annual Southern Maryland Volunteer Firemen’s Association (SMVFA) Parade in Solomons Island. This event and convention rotate each year among the three Southern Maryland counties: Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s.

Calvert ALS was well represented at the parade, bringing six units to the event. Attending units included Car 10 led by Lt. Dickson, Medic 101 staffed by Member Koranda, Medic 103 with Captain Farr, Medic 104 operated by PMIC Stockton and Paramedic Mosher, Utility 10 with PMIC Fleming, and Utility 10A driven by Deputy Chief LaVigne and EMT Radcliff.

The parade attracted a large turnout from both member departments and spectators who lined Solomons Island Road to watch the procession, even as cloudy weather persisted throughout the day.

During the event, Medic 102, Medic 105, and Command 10 remained in service to provide ALS coverage for the county, demonstrating CALS' dedication to providing continued volunteer paramedic coverage to Calvert County's residents!

CALS Medics Assist with a Cardiac Arrest ROSC (Return of Spontaneous Circulation)

At approximately 6:00 p.m. on May 9, 2026, the Calvert Control Center received a report of a person who had fallen and was unconscious. Units from Company 7 and Calvert Advanced Life Support quickly responded to the call.

Soon after dispatch, the incident was upgraded to a cardiac arrest. Deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff's Office who were nearby arrived in less than three minutes, began CPR, and delivered one shock using their AED.

Shortly after, Company 7 arrived, took over CPR, and delivered another shock with their AED. When Medic 105, led by Paramedic Schapiro, the patient was found to be in V-Fib. Paramedic Schapiro assumed care and delivered a third shock using the LP35 device.

The patient's heart rhythm returned to normal, and the patient began to regain consciousness. With assistance from Company 7 members, EMS20D, and CHF10, the patient was prepared for transport and taken to a landing zone for air transport to a cardiac center.

Units: Engine 71, Ambulance 77, Medic 105, Chief 10, EMS20D, CCSO

After a year-long process, the new CAR-10 went into service today.

CAR-10 replaces a 2017 Ford Interceptor (Police Explorer) that was previously used as a recruitment vehicle, for student and member classes, and as a back-up medic unit.

The new CAR-10 will continue to serve these roles by transporting CALS members to classes, acting as a rolling advertisement for the volunteer organization, and serving as a back-up medic unit. This new vehicle is a 2025 Ford Police Interceptor.
