Perry Memorial Hospital is a critical access hospital with over 100 physicians on staff, working to provide quality care that meets the needs of the surrounding rural community.
HISTORY - Prior to the existence of Perry Memorial Hospital, most healthcare occurred in patient’s homes, with little opportunity for nursing care or medical treatment and supervision. Physicians would often travel great distances to treat patients, and sometimes had to convert rooms in their own homes to house acutely ill patients. As of 1893, the Bureau County Medical Society counted 40 physicians as members.
In 1903, two brothers--Dr. L.D. Hickman and Dr. H.V. Hickman--purchased a home on Park Avenue East and used it to open the Princeton Hospital. The hospital focused on x-ray and surgery services using state-of-the-art equipment. However, due to personal illness, financial problems, and lack of support, the brothers closed the hospital after only one year.
In 1905, the hospital was purchased and operated by Dr. Blackburn as a private hospital. He ran the hospital successfully for three years before it closed again. Miss Cox purchased the hospital from Dr. Blackburn, and ran it for two more years until a smallpox epidemic broke out. Two patients died from the epidemic, and the hospital closed for the third and final time.
Perry Memorial Hospital first opened on June 17, 1920, after Julia Rackley Perry of Malden, IL, willed $25,000 for the creation of a community hospital. Her only child had died at the age of nine, and thereafter Julia Rackley Perry devoted her life to church and charity. She passed away on December 29, 1913, and instructed in her will to use the money for the construction or endowment of a public hospital in Princeton within five years of her death. The Princeton Hospital property was purchased as the site for construction, though the original house that served as the hospital continued to stand for another 40 years.
Perry Memorial Hospital originally had enough room for 28 patients and five babies. Even when the hospital opened, it still needed much. When a request went out to the community for assistance, people responded generously with everything from furniture to live chickens. The Women’s Auxiliary worked hard mending and making curtains, bed linens, towels, table linens, gowns, and all related supplies. Door-to-door fund drives were held, and Apollo Theater donated a day’s receipts for the cause. In all, $3306.77 was raised to support the hospital. Perry truly began as a community hospital.
The next century has seen repeated hospital expansion and facilities upgrades. Perry sas continued to rely on up-to-date equipment, medical techniques, and quality physicians to provide the best possible care in an increasingly outpatient world. The hospital offers a 24-hour physician staffed Emergency Department, Intensive Care, Inpatient and Outpatient Surgery, Rehabilitation Services, Pain Management, Laboratory and Radiology, Respiratory Care, Sleep Lab, Orthopedic and Sports Medicine, Endoscopy and Special Procedures, Wound Care, and Ambulatory Care. It has come a long way from a x-ray and surgery house.
Historically, Perry Memorial Hospital serviced primarily the Bureau County region. Today, Perry has expanded its services to bring healthcare conveniently close to home for many communities, including Henry and Walnut. Every day, Perry Memorial Hospital emphasizes Respect, Excellence, Service, and Community for every person who walks into any one of its facilities.
