We know, we know…flossing isn’t your number one priority, BUT it’s an important part of maintaining good oral health!

Flossing twice a day (same for brushing!) reduces your risk of gum disease, prevents cavities, improves breath, and freshens your teeth. If you’re not a fan of floss, water flossers/waterpiks are a great alternative! Just remember to be gentle! If you need to brush up on your flossing technique, your hygienist is a pro and can demonstrate for you!

Brushing your teeth right before the dentist doesn’t make up for not brushing every day!

Daily brushing (2 minutes, twice a day) and flossing keeps your teeth and gums healthy long-term, preventing tooth decay, gum disease, and even heart disease. Although visiting your dentist may seem routine, the impact brushing and flossing can have on your health is profound!

BUT brushing before your appointment does have a perk…it gives your dentist a clear view of your smile and helps your cleaning go even smoother! 🪥🦷✨

It’s October again, which means it’s National Dental Hygiene Month! Your dental health (and hygiene!) directly relates to your oral health, and our dental hygienists are often the first line of defense when battling tooth decay, gum disease, and oral health problems. Your hygienist is a licensed professional who works to prevent, detect, and treat oral disease by offering education and specific recommendations on proper dental hygiene techniques to maintain and enhance your smile, while also encouraging you to develop a personalized at-home oral hygiene routine.

By routinely combating dental disease through regular visits with your hygienist, you can prevent significant tooth decay, gum disease, tooth loss, and other diseases connected to poor oral health.

Stay tuned for our hygienist reveal!! 🦷🪥✨

Dental myth: brushing harder means cleaner teeth 🪥

FALSE-It’s important to brush your teeth thoroughly, however, brushing too hard can wear down the enamel and cause discoloration and sensitivity. In addition, brushing too hard may also damage your gums and even cause them to bleed and recede. Toothpaste is abrasive enough! Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush or better yet, use an electric toothbrush and avoid applying too much pressure when brushing!

The East coast is having a heat wave this week! There are many ways to stay cool-but chewing ice shouldn’t be one of them!

Chewing ice can cause significant damage to your teeth and gums—it can lead to enamel wear, cracks, and even fractures, increasing sensitivity and the risk of cavities. It has the potential to damage dental work like fillings and crowns and cause gum irritation. It may also be a sign of an underlying health issue like iron deficiency anemia!

Before you injure your teeth further, consult with your dentist about your ice cravings!

✨Fun Fact Friday✨

The toothbrush has come a long way from its early origins! The earliest known toothbrushes used by ancient civilizations were chewing sticks, and were made from twigs or branches frayed at one end. They were rubbed against the teeth to remove food and plaque.

The bristle toothbrush quickly spread to other parts of the world after the Chinese introduced the very first version.

Nylon bristles were introduced in the 20th century—they were more durable than boar or horsehair, and also less likely to harbor bacteria.

And in 1960, the first electric toothbrush came on the scene! Today’s electric toothbrushes can time how long you brush, sense how much pressure you are using, and can connect to your smartphone! What do you think the future holds for toothbrush evolution??
