You might be wondering why Hispanic Heritage Month starts in the middle of a month. Well, Sept 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence (from Spain) for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept 16 and Sept 18, respectively. It made sense to align the beginning of those celebrations with this month where we honor the contributions of people from all of those countries into the US.
