IN LOVING MEMORY

John L. Benton, 82, of Princeton, passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at his home.

He was born on March 25, 1944, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, to his late parents, Thomas Harlin and Ruth (Williams) Benton. John spent his early childhood in Bardwell, Kentucky before moving with his family to Eureka, Missouri where he later graduated from Eureka High School in 1962. John lived a life marked by faith, service, and compassion. He humbly served in the United States Army Reserves while earning his bachelor’s and then his master’s degrees from Murray State University. John later received his Master of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Above all earthly blessings, John treasured the life he shared with Paula. The two met while attending Murray State University in 1966 and were married in 1970, beginning a marriage firmly rooted in Christ, love, and devotion. Together they faithfully served the Lord through ministry, prayer, and caring for others. John and Paula shared a deep love for their family and adored their children and grandchildren.

He devoted 20 years to the Kentucky Department of Corrections, becoming deputy warden at Western Kentucky Correctional Complex and later serving as chief chaplain for the Corrections Cabinet at Kentucky State Penitentiary. He then faithfully served for 20 years as associate pastor of Southside Baptist Church, where his steady faith and servant’s heart touched countless lives.

John was widely regarded as one of the most well-mannered gentlemen and a man of deep moral conviction with unwavering faith and integrity. He was steadfast in his character and remained true to his values, often reminding his family that there was never a reason to be unkind. He was a man whose love for Christ was evident in both word and deed. Through his prayer and counseling, his Godly influence reached many. Those who knew him often spoke of his intellect and wisdom. He always seemed to know just the right thing to say. Many in the community especially remember him for portraying Jesus in his church’s Christmas, Easter, and Judgement House dramas, a role he accepted with sincerity and dedication.

He loved traveling and antiquing with Paula, fishing, canoeing, riding his Harley, searching for arrowheads and a good roadside treasure, and especially cheering on his grandchildren at their activities and sporting events. He also enjoyed hiking, where he frequently found wildflowers to make a bouquet to bring back for his Paula. John will be remembered for the patience, kindness, and wisdom he shared with everyone who knew him. However, above all, John will be remembered for how much he loved Jesus and how he strived every day to be more like Him.

John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Paula Sanders Benton; son, John "Brent" (Amy) Benton of Louisville; daughter, Abbey (David) Belt of Paducah; brother, David Edward (Linda) Benton of Peachtree City, GA; sister-in-law, Charlotte Benton of Wentzville, MO; brother-in-law Ron (Melinda) Sanders of Shepherdsville; eight grandchildren, Anna, K.P., and Noah Benton, McKenzi (Nathan) Simmons, Parker and Keiler Belt, Emma Grace and Elizabeth Gilbert; three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Emmett and Reid Simmons, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Benton, Jr.

IN LOVING MEMORY

Ruth Ann Curlee, age 85, formerly of Louisville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Caldwell Medical Center.

Ruth, a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, was born to the late Merritt “Bud” Calvin Bryant and Mary Adams Bryant. She found her greatest joy in life’s simplest gifts-a warm cup of coffee, quiet early mornings with Jesus, and the sweet giggles of her great-grandchildren. Above all else, her heart belonged to her family.

She cherished every conversation with her daughter, grandchildren, son-in-law, and dear friends, never rushing a moment and always making others feel seen and valued. Ruth had a rare gift-she listened deeply, loved genuinely, and encouraged freely. Whether it was a heartfelt conversation or a simple “I hope you have a really special day” to a stranger in passing, she had a way of leaving people better than she found them. To be loved by Ruth was a gift-one that left a lasting imprint on the heart.

She was gentle, kind, and full of life-often a little playful and wonderfully goofy-with eyes that sparkled with love and a spirit that made people feel special and loved.

Ruth spent many years as a real estate agent in Louisville before retiring with her beloved husband, Odie, to Vero Beach, Florida, and later to Newland, North Carolina. From a young age, she was drawn to both the water and the mountains, finding peace and beauty in each. After Odie went home to be with the Lord and her health began to decline, Ruth moved to Lake Barkley to live with her daughter, Dana, and son-in-law, Randy. She often said it was her favorite place in the world, and she was deeply grateful to spend her final years there, surrounded by love.

Most importantly, Ruth loved Jesus. Her faith was steady and evident in the way she lived, and she longed for her eternal home in Heaven-a place she now joyfully resides.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Dana (Randy) Clayton of Eddyville; grandchildren,Nick (Elyse) Clayton of Carmel, Indiana, Lindsey (Eric) Kessler of Westfield, Indiana, and great-grandchildren, Chatham Kessler, Clayton Kessler, Abigail Clayton, and Baby Clayton, who will arrive in October. She is also survived by a very special group of nieces and nephews, along with treasured friends who meant so much to her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Odie Curlee; sisters, Peggy Schmidt, Thelma Rishor, Mary Jo Morgan, Doris Tipton, and Donna Callahan; and brothers, Robert Bryant and Kenny Bryant.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who loved Ruth so well, especially in her later years. Every visit, every conversation, and every moment shared meant the world to her. A special thank you is also extended to Dr. David French and the compassionate team at Caldwell Medical Center for their exceptional care.

There will be no public services held at this time. In true “Ruthie” fashion, she would want this simple reminder to be her farewell: take time to be with the people you love, cherish the moments God has given you, and never miss an opportunity to make someone feel special.

Morgan’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
